Writer Paul Cornell, Artist Marika Cresta, and AHOY Comics Present a Decades-Long Satire of the Comic Book Industry and Its Biggest Conventions

Issue 1 Drops in July, Ahead of Comic-Con International

(April 25, 2023) This July, writer Paul Cornell (Doctor Who), artist Marika Cresta (Doctor Aphra), and AHOY Comics will present a fantastic and funny satire of the comic book industry and its biggest conventions. CON & ON is a brand new five-part tragi-comedy which follows a fictional but all-too-familiar ensemble cast of pros and fans down through the decades of America’s most colossal comic book convention: the Vista Al Mar Comics Festival on the California coast. The series debuts on July 12, 2023, ahead of Comic-Con International.

CON & ON is the story of five different years in the life of the Festival—one year per issue, spanning three decades—from the points of view of a diverse bunch of desperate people whose lives revolve around this greatest show on Earth. Meet close friends Eddie and Deja, aspiring young comics talents whose ambitions threaten to tear them apart; Anthony, Don & Finn, brilliant, boozy and bombastic British creators; and all of the crusty veteran editors, forgotten TV stars, and enthusiastic fans who make the convention experience something to revisit year after year.

“CON & ON is the romance of every big convention, the bittersweet journey through time and success, the highs and the lows and the silliness,” said writer Paul Cornell. “It’s the story of every fan and every pro and everyone who’s just trying to make a buck in the midst of extremity. Through the narratives of our large cast of characters we see, in miniature, the story of the last few decades of modern comics: how some things have changed and how some things have stayed exactly the damn same.”

“CON & ON is the real mirror of the panorama of conventions,” said artist Marika Cresta. “Anyone who has ever lived in this comics world will surely find themselves in one of the many characters who animate this story and make it feel alive and unexpectedly real. I loved working on it because it’s a world I live in and I’m passionate about the idea of being able to depict it, both in its positive and negative aspects!”

“I’ve never read a comic quite like CON & ON,” said series editor Tom Peyer. “Paul and Marika expertly balance the pomp and spectacle of a huge convention with small, intimate moments among flesh-and-blood people you’ll be glad to know.”

Here’s what people are saying about CON & ON:

“Funny, smart and sharply observed. Does what every great con does: reminds you that while the medium is obsessed with the superhuman, it’s the human that makes it matter. For better, or for worse.”—Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine)

“Trust Paul Cornell to find the humanity and weirdness in the comics industry and the rise of organized comics fandom. This is one convention you won’t want to miss.”

—Charlie Jane Anders (The City in the Middle of the Night)

“The first issue promises a world of comics history only slightly altered to protect the innocent (and the guilty), with all the charm of a seasoned raconteur propping up the bar of a favorite convention gone by.”—Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk)

“This was a blast. Cornell and Cresta combine their formidable talents to tell a comics-history-infused tale loaded with heart, plenty of winks and nods, lovely art, and memorable wit — creating a page-turner that will keep you wanting more. Readers will want to get a permanent residence in the sharp, funny world they’ve created.”

—Alex Segura (Secret Identity)

“With a cheeky blend of loose comics history and tantalizing look through the eyes of two industry hopefuls at the types of creators that helped make the biz, one can’t help but turn the page to find more clues about how the sequential sausage is made.”

—Cecil Castelluci (Shade the Changing Girl)

“Con & On is a trip. It’s a window into a different time when Comic Shows became COMIC CONS. It’s a satire of the comic cons of yesterday, but it’s a satire with a lot of heart. Can’t wait to see where it goes next.”—Dan Slott (The Amazing Spider-Man)

“To read CON AND ON is to allow Paul Cornell and Marika Cresta to conjure in your mind the vital spirits, sights, sounds, and smells of the last three decades of nerd culture with startling clarity. This is no hagiography of nerd culture, but the real story, with names graciously changed to protect the not-so-innocent. And I should know — I’m pretty sure I’m in it.”

—Jackson Lanzing (Captain America Sentinel of Liberty)

“For anyone who was there at the time it feels… well, like being there at the time. Affectionate, pin-sharp and wickedly funny.”—Mike Carey (Lucifer)

“The total familiarity in this comic is all at once hilarious, heart-warming and excruciating; much like our much-beloved, much-beleaguered industry most of the time. Paul and his team capture so well in these pages characters we all know, sentiments we all share…and also that exhilarating buzz that many of us once felt way back when we first entered the convention space and found ‘our people’. I feel like I’ve met all of these characters, for better or for worse, and I’m pretty sure I’ve been a few of them too.”—Emma Vieceli (Life is Strange)

“A profoundly well-observed waltz through the heart, soul and timeline of a comic convention, packed to the gills with the strange, the sad, the spectacular and the sinister — just like the real thing.  Like some living, breathing meta-biography of an event rather than merely a person or place, these vignettes feel so acutely familiar they both hurt and heal in all the best ways.”—Si Spurrier (X-Force)

“Paul, as always, writes brilliantly and his characters are always totally believable. The commentary track is genius. Like me, you will be simply desperate to read the rest.”—Rachael Smith (Wired Up Wrong)

“In the tradition of the best Robert Altman films, CON AND ON’s multiple points of view all build on one another, together capturing the spirit, nuance and complexities of the comics industry at the first of many pivotal moments. I can’t wait for more!”—Kyle Higgins (Radiant Black)

“A love letter to comic fandom, creators and con-culture. Heartfelt and insightful.”—New York Times Bestseller Cavan Scott (Star Wars: The High Republic)

CON & ON will be published monthly by AHOY Comics and available in stores on July 12, 2022.

The World at the End of the Rabbit Hole Grows Larger in ALICE NEVER AFTER

Come back and explore the dark corners of Dan Panosian’s Wonderland!

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 18, 2023) –  Dan Panosian (An Unkindness of Ravens) and Giorgio Spalleta’s (Magic) twisted take on Alice in Wonderland will continue to blur the lines between fantasy and reality this Summer in ALICE NEVER AFTER, only at BOOM! Studios.

Alice finally got her wish. Wonderland has become her new home, but with her abuser’s avatar with the uncanny grin turning the mad residents of a moonstruck world against her, she’s clawing for a little rationality amongst the chaos.

As Alice’s sister, Edith and her childhood friend Earl fight for a way to bring her back, Alice has to contend with whether or not her torment is due to her father, herself, or maybe a curious combination of both…

Dan Panosian is comic book writer and artist for Boom Studios as well as Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Dynamite and Mad Cave – with a long list of credits ranging from Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men to Slots and Alice Ever After. He’s also the Co-Founder of the Original Drink and Draw Social Club.  You can follow his work on Twitter and Instagram via @UrbanBarbarian

“Following Alice down the rabbit hole is one thing, but getting out is harder than it looks!  Ask Alice – she’s stuck there – PERMANENTLY!  Join Giorgio, Francesco and I on a little trip to Wonderland… Bring some tea, we’ll provide the mushrooms and madness!” said writer Dan Panosian.

Giorgio Spalletta is a cartoonist and illustrator born in 1989. He has collaborated with Editoriale Aurea, Bugs Comics, Sergio Bonelli Editore, Editoriale Cosmo, IDW Publishing as assistant to David Messina, and as an illustrator for Ferrari. Since 2018 he has been a professor at the International School of Comics. He has published for Sergio Bonelli Editore La Divina Congrega series of which he is creating the second volume. In 2022 BOOM! Studios announced his new series Alice Ever After written by international superstar Dan Panosian.

“Dan pushed me back down the rabbit hole! It’s great to get lost in Wonderland again, I think I’ll stay there,” said artist Giorgio Spalleta.

ALICE NEVER AFTER features covers by Dan Panosian, Jenny Frison (Wonder Woman), and InHyuk Lee (Alien).

“I’m so happy Dan and Giorgio wanted to come back to their weird and macabre Wonderland. They’re having a ton of fun with how they’re approaching the story and injecting it with some more thematically heavy elements that build off the first series beautifully. Readers are going to be ecstatically surprised by what madness they have in store,” said supervising editor Bryce Carlson.

ALICE NEVER AFTER is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including BRZRKR by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney; Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera; Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; Eve by Victor LaValle and Jo Mi-Gyeong; The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade; Wynd by James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas; Grim by Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano; Briar by Christopher Cantwell and Germán García; Stuff of Nightmares by R.L. Stine and A.L. Kaplan; The Approach by Jeremy Haun, Jason A. Hurley, and Jesus Hervas; Damn Them All by Simon Spurrier and Charlie Adlard; Behold, Behemoth by Tate Brombal and Nick Robles; Specs by David M. A hodgepodge of trailers, music videos and a free video game link.

Take a 2016 short by Nick Vokey & Nate Sherman, bring in Carson Mell to expand it. Get Luke Wilson to voice the lead and you get Fired On Mars, the series.

Music videos that tell stories and also are amazing music creating eye and ear candy are my favorite.

The new trailer for The Boogeyman is cut really well and makes the jump scare thriller from a team of writers & directors behind some of the aughties best and most popular horror movies ever based on a 1970s Stephen King short story and unrelated to the prior film series of the same name.

Less story and more stimulating visuals here, but man… that beat.

Helen Mirren is always fantastic. I am putting trust that the writer, director and production team worked hard to adapt R.J. Palacio’s heavily researched graphic novel (which I proudly own a copy of)… the trailer shows promise for White Bird.

ACME FOOLS and WB100 celebration continues as Looney Tunes gets mashed up with The Flintstones. What will be next? There’s plenty from the WB catalog to do..

A movie about making a movie starring a dog. Came out in 2019 and available on AU platforms but finally getting official US distribution.

8-Bit Universe always rocks it and here they do it again with the Gary Numan classic CARS.

Nerd Notes (4/6/23)

Back in the days of LJ before Social media became the advent of everything and we were all about snippets quick and hard I would collect all my favorite trailers, music videos, news, etc. from the net and would collect as something I called Nerd Notes. When I started Pop-Culture Spectrum I planned to continue it but social media really got in the way. Now I have decided it’s time to bring it back, so here’s a collection of movie and television trailers and maybe something else.

A documentary from a noted documetarian on Michael J. Fox

Paul Bettany as a bong?

Ari Aster makes great movies

They moved this Superman cartoon from CN to AS and that makes me even more excited.

We have no interest in Super Mario anything here at P-CS but this Bowling For Soup song and the pixel art animation video is awesome.

Magnetic Press to Support Animal Cruelty Prevention Month With Graphic Novel MY FRIEND TOBY

A Heartwarming Canine Adventure by Triple-Eisner nominee Gregory Panaccione Premiering on Kickstarter March 28th.
CHICAGO, IL (March 23, 2023) — Celebrated graphic novel and art book publisher Magnetic Press has announced plans in support of Animal Cruelty Prevention Month throughout April, starting with the launch of MY FRIEND TOBY, a heartwarming, wordless graphic novel by triple-Eisner Award-nominee Gregory Panaccione (A SEA OF LOVE).

This feature-length hardcover follows Toby, an average, energetic Terrier living on the coast with his artist friend, Marcel. When Marcel goes through a broken-hearted rough patch, their future grows uncertain, but carefree Toby gives life all the fun and meaning a loyal pet can provide. This adorable adventure will appeal to dog and animal-lovers of all ages.

MY FRIEND TOBY will be offered through a Kickstarter campaign launching Tuesday, March 28th.
In addition to the book, supporters will be able to pick up various book bundles featuring Gregory Panaccione’s Eisner-nominated A SEA OF LOVE, as well as many of Magnetic Press’s other celebrated books about animals, wildlife, anti-cruelty, and wordless stories. Each order will include an exclusive orange “Animal Ally” Anti-Cruelty awareness ribbon, with additional campaign-exclusive bonuses offered with different bundle pairings. For example, the “Cats & Dogs” Bundle will include a copy of LOVE: THE MASTIFF by multiple-Eisner Award-nominees Frederic Brremaud and Federico Bertolucci and CATS CATS CATS, a collection of hilarious cat cartoons by Lapuss and Larbier, along with a bonus 3” foam rubber ball for your favorite fur buddy to enjoy.
Other bundles include a digital mega-bundle of 20 animal-centric graphic novels from Magnetic Press’s digital library, many of which have collected awards and nominations worldwide. Animal lovers are encouraged to visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/neurobellum/my-friend-toby-graphic-novels-for-animal-lovers on March 28th for the full list of titles.

Independent of the funds raised in Kickstarter, Magnetic will make a donation to the Anti-Cruelty Society commensurate to the success of the campaign. Founded in 1899, The Anti-Cruelty Society is dedicated to placing homeless animals with caring families while fighting instances of animal cruelty. Other online actions are planned throughout the month to help raise awareness of this precious effort to assist animals in need.

(The Anti-Cruelty Society is not formally associated with the campaign; donations will be made independently by Magnetic Press.)
Written and illustrated by award-winning storyboard artist Gregory Panaccione, MY FRIEND TOBY is a light and often hilarious tale about a dog any pet owner would recognize: curious, carefree, and always hungry. Through the course of this 144-page adventure, Toby will stand by his stressed friend Marcel, comforting and occasionally inspiring him through tough times, as any loyal pet will do. Told completely without dialogue, Panaccione explores the true thought processes of man’s best friend in a way that anyone can understand.
“We’ve been passionate animal allies since long before launching Magnetic Press nine years ago,” says Mike Kennedy, Magnetic Press’s Publisher. “There’s a reason we have so many animal-centric titles in our library. Any opportunity to help the Anti-Cruelty Society is a good one. We adopted our cat, Lando, from ACS, and we want to help them find homes for many, many more loving housemates this month.”
The limited pre-order campaign for MY FRIEND TOBY will run for 18 days on Kickstarter, ending Friday, April 14th at 5pm CST. Books are expected to ship to supporters and bookstores in July, 2023.

More info about Magnetic Press is available on Facebook, Twitter, and the official website, www.magnetic-press.com.
