Travel to the early 20th Century in a small Norwegian Town

(all screenshots taken direct from game and are spoiler-free)

The interactive first person story teller that is DRAUGEN is an intriguing one. It falls in the current world of the new adventure game in which puzzles take a back seat to art, story and mechanics. That isn’t a bad thing. It’s a venture of our ever changing world that allows stories to be told in different fashions so they never get old. They’ll forever be labeled video games and will always have the mechanic of such, be in running when you need to run, following a path, or simply choosing the order you look at items to unlock progression. Those simple additions take it from film to video game though and while to some the term walking simulator is applied, that also is not a bad thing.

Case in point Draugen takes place in a remote island town of Norway in the 1920s and follows a mystery going back over 30 years. It doesn’t matter that unfortunately a major part of the mystery is never revealed completely, while it’s true I found myself screaming “But what happened in redacted?” or “So why did redacted actually redacted?” it didn’t take away my enjoyment.

Unlike another reviewer my favorite character was Lissie, while I found the character we controlled Edward Theodore “Teddy” Lander to be a whiny, annoying weak character for the entire first half of the game. This was rectified later by giving reasons to why the character was the way he is and made Draugen so much more more than just a basic 1920s Noir.

One of the truest highlights outside the story, flawed or not are the graphics. It is an idyllic, quiet town but it is beautiful as well with mountains, rivers, trees, grass, shacks, houses, and most important to me goats. The “hidden” goats who are actually in plain view but not in spots you’d automatically look. They add so much to the game. The art for Lissie is really great too though, which is important since you see so much of her.

Some of the mysteries in Draugen may go unsolved unless you just know the truth, but the mystery is the experience worth it? To that I say yes. While much more interactive visual novel with walking sim it does not detract from and truly enjoyable experience, especially at its price point.Draugen is available NOW on Steam as well on GOG for $19.99.

LIFE ON THE MOON: The Famous Fake News Story, Now Available as a Graphic Novel by Iconic Illustrator Robert Grossman

Robert Grossman was the famed artist of over 500 magazine covers (Time, New York Times, Rolling Stone, New York, National Lampoon, etc.), iconic film posters (for instance, Airplane! and its famous imagery of fuselage being tied in a knot), Acady Award-nominated animation, and ingenious comic strips.

Grossman completed his magnum opus and decade-long passion, the graphic novel Life on The Moon, shortly before his passing last year. The artist, who reveled in illustrating the “un-illustratable,” wrote and drew this historical work based on the “Great Moon Hoax” of the mid-19thcentury, the most successful fake news in media history.

Film director Terry Gilliam calls Life on the Moon, “Amazingly inventive!” and reveals that in his professional history, “I did my best to follow in Robert Grossman’s footsteps!”

In 1835, New York newspaper The Sunpublished a series of six articles attributed to the famous contemporary astronomer Sir John Herschel declaring the discovery of life — and even civilization — on the Moon! According to The Sun, the lunar inhabitants included unicorns, bison, bipedal tail-less beavers, and intelligent humanoids with bat-like wings.

Life on the Moon is a full-length graphic novel capturing this mythical world. Robert Grossman said the book is set in a time when “many of the signal achievements of the 19th Century still lay well in the future, Andrew Jackson was president, the steamboat was the summit of technology, and news traveled slowly.” The unfettered novel includes real historical figures such as P.T. Barnum, Jean Jacques Audubon, Lorenzo Da Ponte, Charles Goodyear, and Edgar Allan Poe. Grossman stated that, “Life on the Moon is meant to be at least partly funny, and has a rip-roaring sci-fi ending.”

He concluded, “I read somewhere that William Randolph Hearst insisted that everything he produced had: tears, laughs, loves, and thrills. Life on the Moon has all that and more.”

Art Director, author, and graphic historian Steven Heller declares, “Bob Grossman, one of America’s most innovative caricaturists, was a spirited storyteller with a bottomless well of historical fact and trivia to draw from. In Life on the Moon, he weaves a tale that cannot be read just once, so on that next trip to the Moon, take it along.”

Journalist Pete Hamill proclaims, “Grossman has the subtle power to change the way we perceive reality, like Chekhov or the best of Hemingway.”

The New York Times called Grossman “an outstanding illustrator with a brash touch.” The Washington Post called his work “incisive”, Rolling Stone said his art was “biting” and the creator of Mad, Harvey Kurtzman, called Grossman’s art “Perfect!”

Yoe Books’ Craig Yoe says, “We are both humbled and immensely proud to be publishing this masterpiece in our new original graphic novel series. I fully expect Life on the Moon, Robert Grossman’s tour de force, to take its rightful place among the most revered works in our field.”

While this may just be a development announcement, it has a screenwriter attached giving one more to be excited for. If this comes to fruition I for sure will be watching.

PORTLAND, Ore. 06/11/2019 — Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures announced this morning that the sci-fi drama Oblivion Song—based upon the New York Times bestselling Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible, Outcast by Kirkman & Azaceta) and artist Lorenzo De Felici’s bestselling comic book series of the same name—is being developed for film.

Universal’s Executive Vice President of Production Jon Mone and Director of Development Lexi Barta will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. The Oblivion Song adaptation will be produced by Skybound’s film team, including Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst, with Sean O’Keefe attached to write the script.

O’Keefe’s latest project, Wonderland, which stars Mark Wahlberg with Peter Berg directing, recently wrapped filming. O’Keefe sold the first script based on the Robert B. Parker bestselling Spenser book series in a deal with Netflix.

Image/Skybound Entertainment’s Oblivion Song by Kirkman and De Felici is colored by Annalisa Leoni, lettered by Rus Wooton, and edited by Sean Mackiewicz. It takes place a decade after 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in Oblivion. The government made every attempt to recover them but after many years they gave up. Nathan Cole won’t. He makes daily trips, risking his life to try and rescue those lost, alone and afraid, living in the apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion. But maybe… Nathan is looking for something else. Why can’t he resist the siren call of the Oblivion Song?

Oblivion Song, Vol. 1 (ISBN: 978-1534306424) and Oblivion Song, Vol. 2 (ISBN: 978-1534310575) trade paperbacks are available now in comic shops and at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, IndieBound, and Indigo.

THQ Nordic High Command advises all citizens to stay calm and stop resisting – just watch the announcement trailer:

Sweeney Boo and Lylian’s EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF From BOOM! Studios

Discover a Deeply Personal Story About the Magic of Learning to Accept and Love Yourself in April 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 6, 2019) – BOOM! Studios today announced a brand new original graphic novel, based on the successful Kickstarter campaign, from the creative duo of cartoonist Sweeney Boo (Love Is Love) and co-writer Lylian (Ellana),EAT, AND LOVE YOURSELF, about a young woman who struggles with society’s image of her body and personhood then finds a magical item that takes her on an incredible journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, available in stores April 2020.

Mindy is a young woman living with an eating disorder and trapped in a battle for her own self-worth. When she accidentally discovers something that will give her a chance to revisit her past—the relationships she’s lost, the mistakes she’s made, all of it— she thinks she has a chance to undo every wrong turn, to put her life back on track. But will she be able to find a way back to her present, and just as important, a way to treat herself with love and kindness, at any size?

Sweeney Boo is a comic artist and illustrator living in Montreal, Canada. She started working as a comic letterer and colorist for French publishers right after graduation, while pursuing her dream of being a comic artist. She made her comic debut during the summer 2016 when she created a cover and a short story for Image Comics’Rat Queens. In 2017, she worked on the costume designs of America Chavez, Inferno, and Patriot for the show “Marvel Rising,” combining two of her favorite things, fashion and superheroes. Boo now does work for various publishers including BOOM! Studios, Archie Comics, IDW, Marvel, and Image Comics.

“Working on EAT, AND LOVE YOURSELF is a true healing experience for me. I suffered from an eating disorder in my early twenties, and while I was working on myself and getting better, I discovered how taboo and difficult of a subject it was to talk about.” said writer and artist, Sweeney Boo. “This book is for everyone who has a difficult relationship with their body, or just themselves… I want to show everyone that they’re beautiful the way they are.”

Lylian is a comic book writer from France. In 2004, Les Humanoids Associés published his first book, L’Éveil du Kurran, designed by Dune and co-written by Nori. In 2010, Lylian adapted novelist Pierre Bottero’s The Quest of Ewilan whose first book is published in the Éditions Glénat in 2013. Passionate about comic books, literature, and cinema, Lylian currently writes several comic book series, adaptations, and original stories that highlight his interest in psychology.

“Working on EAT, AND LOVE YOURSELF is first and foremost a human, sincere, profound encounter with Sweeney Boo, who has been carrying this story for years.” said artist, Lylian. “I am honored to be a part of this book that holds such personal meaning for Sweeney.”

EAT, AND LOVE YOURSELF is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such asLumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Avant-Guards by Carly Usdin and Noah Hayes; Misfit City by Kiwi Smith, Kurt Lustgarten, and Naomi Franquiz; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

EAT, AND LOVE YOURSELF is a timely and deeply personal story about battling society’s expectations and learning to unpack all the toxicity of impossible standards,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Sweeney and Lylian bring Sweeney’s own experiences to life in a story that’s magical, moving, and a triumph for people everywhere who fight every day to love who they are.”

Print copies of EAT, AND LOVE YOURSELF will be available for sale in April 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores or at the BOOM!
