HEAVY VINYL Returns with New Graphic Novel from BOOM! Studios in 2020

Get Ready For the Fight of the Millenium in HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O! in March 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 5, 2019) –  BOOM! Studios is proud to continue The Road to San Diego, a ten-day, ten-announcement spotlight on the most exciting comic book and graphic novel news in advance of Comic Con International in San Diego (July 17–21), with the announcement today of HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O!. The brand new original graphic novel, available in stores March 2020, reunites the acclaimed team of filmmaker and writer Carly Usdin (The Avant-Guards) and artist Nina Vakueva (League of Legends: Ashe – Warmother) for a brand-new adventure with the music store crew—and secret fight club—of HEAVY VINYL.

Your favorite girl gang is back and on the brink of a new millennium! It’s the summer of 1999, and while the staff of Vinyl Destination is dealing with growing up and getting out into the world, the tension over Y2K is mounting into an all-out panic! Can this group of music-loving vigilantes balance their work lives with their dating lives, prevent the total collapse of modern society, AND be home in time for dinner?! Only one way to find out!

Carly Usdin is an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Her first feature,Suicide Kale, won the Audience Award for Best First Feature at Outfest 2016.  Carly is also the creator and writer of two comic book series for BOOM! Studios: Heavy Vinyl and The Avant-Guards. Heavy Vinyl was nominated for a 2018 Prism Award, honoring the best in LGBTQIA+ comics.

Carly has recently completed her short film Misdirection, created as part of the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, class of 2019. Currently she is developing several projects through her production company Scheme Machine Studios, which she owns with her wife, photographer and producer Robin Roemer.

“Getting the chance to continue the Heavy Vinyl story is a dream come true! I’m thrilled to be reunited with my precious little ‘90s babies. The story picks up a few months later — it’s 1999, digital music and file sharing have upset the status quo, and Y2K approaches!!” said writer, Carly Usdin. “You can expect the same level of exhaustively-researched pop culture references with new characters, a new mystery, and more Chris/Maggie cuteness. I’ve been having a great time writing it, and I can’t wait for fans to read it.”

Nina Vakueva is a self-taught freelance artist born and based in Moscow. She graduated from Moscow Architectural University in 2014, worked briefly for the Architectural Bureau then moved to comic books and character design. Nina worked as part of Russian comic studio, Bubble, and currently works as an artist on Heavy Vinyl for BOOM! Studios, League of Legends: Ashe – Warmother for Marvel Entertainment, and on her original webcomic, Lilith’s Word.

“It’s time for Chris and the rest of the vigilante girl group from HEAVY VINYL to tackle Y2K!” said artist Nina Vakueva. “These teens are always up for a big adventure, so catch them hacking computers and fighting crime, all while playing their favorite music and having fun with their friends in the new HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O!

The HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O! cover will feature artwork by Nina Vakueva.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be teaming up with Carly and Nina to bring everyone a brand new graphic novel set in the kick-ass, action-packed world of Heavy Vinyl.” said Shannon Watters,  Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “There’ll be plenty of sweet, sweet lady romance, action, mystery, and late ‘90s fashion and goofy good times in this love letter to the historic manic panic of the Y2K craze.”

HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O! is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such as Lumberjanesby Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Daysby John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Avant-Guards by Carly Usdin and Noah Hayes; Misfit City by Kiwi Smith, Kurt Lustgarten, and Naomi Franquiz;Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

Shaffer’s Biden rides the Quirk train again!

In Andrew Shaffer’s HOPE NEVER DIES we got introduced to a “retired” Joe Biden. Through circumstances he ends up enraptured in a murder mystery in his hometown on Delaware. At the end of it he returns to the quiet life.

The sequel HOPE RIDES AGAIN brings back the character of Biden, but he’s a slightly different man this time. He’s no longer retired, he’s on a book tour, considering running for president and his curious nature now pulls him into the underbelly of Chicago. This backdrop allows for references from people to locations that places the book clearly as a bigger, louder sequel.

I loved everything about this book. The action, the humor, the bromance, the mystery, the twist and the turns. This is a non stop adventure comedy of the akin on the screen with any of the 80s cop and robber rip roaring buddy and solo escapades.

Non-stop is an inaccurate statement actually as there are plenty of moments of introspection in which Biden studies the investigation, his choices in life and Chicago itself throughout. It’s actually where Shaffer’s shines as he really has a handle of the character and the voice chosen. It’s not the Biden one might see on television or real life, but it’s a relatable character of a man who has seen time pass him by while trying to to stay relevant.

I have so much more I could say about this book and my enjoyment of it but I’m better off sharing this informal conversation I had with author Andrew Shaffer at Book Expo 2019.

HOPE RIDES AGAIN comes out from Quirk Books on July 9th, 2019. Click through the link for all the places to purchase it.

BOOM! Studios Announces Finale to Acclaimed Series GIANT DAYS: AS TIME GOES BY #1

Discover What Everyone’s Favorite Sheffielders Are Up to After Graduation in October 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 2, 2019) –  BOOM! Studios is proud to continue The Road to San Diego, a ten-day, ten-announcement spotlight on the most exciting comic book and graphic novel news in advance of Comic Con International in San Diego (July 17–21), with the announcement today of GIANT DAYS: AS TIME GOES BY #1. The oversized one-shot comic book issue concludes the Eisner Award-nominated series by creator John Allison (Scary Go Round) and artist Max Sarin, giving fans one final adventure with Esther, Daisy, and Susan after they’ve graduated from Sheffield University, and will be available in stores October 2019.

Where are they now? Well, fourteen months after graduation, Esther, Susan, and Daisy have moved onto different careers, friends, and lives, and it’s safe to say that things aren’t quite the same. Their reunion in Sheffield is their chance to reconnect and rebuild the close-knit best friendships they all had while at university, but Esther’s a publishing muckety muck in London now and not sure she can make time for her old friends.

Will she be able to escape the time-sucking vortex of her vampiric co-workers, the Cressidas, and their awful influence long enough to make the reunion? Will Susan and Daisy ever forgive Esther if she doesn’t show up? Is this the absolute end for our favorite Sheffielders? And what’s McGraw doing all day at the local key shop? So many questions, so little time AS TIME GOES BY in this double-sized special finale issue.

Based in Letchworth Garden City, UK, John Allison is the creator of the comic seriesGiant Days, By Night, and Steeple, and of the ongoing all-ages book series Bad Machinery. In addition, he created the webcomics Bobbins and Scary Go Round, with his work appearing online since 1998. He was one of the first comic artists to build a daily following exclusively on the internet.

John’s various comics have been nominated for Eisner Awards every year from 2016-2019, and in 2018 he won the Best Long-Form Online Comic award from the US National Cartoonists’ Society. Giant Days has sold almost half a million copies worldwide and is currently being published in seven foreign language editions.

“This comic has always been about small moments and big catastrophes, so going out with a double-sized special gives me a chance to do plenty of both. It’s impossible to please everybody when you’re saying goodbye, but heaven knows, the GIANT DAYS team are going to try.” said creator, John Allison.

Max Sarin is the National Cartoonist Award-winning comic book artist and illustrator from Finland who is known for their work on the Eisner-nominated series Giant Dayswith creator John Allison.

GIANT DAYS is about the best of days with friends: joy and laughter, panic and excitement—all the great stuff that life is made of.” said artist, Max Sarin. “It’s been amazing working on this series that so many people have embraced and enjoyed throughout the years.”

GIANT DAYS: AS TIME GOES BY #1 features a main cover and variant cover by artist Max Sarin.

AS TIME GOES BY, friendships and relationships can change but that doesn’t mean they have to disappear completely, and looking at everything Esther, Susan, and Daisy have been through, it’s impossible to think their friendship won’t last forever.” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “John Allison and Max Sarin have created a beautiful tribute to the three university students who not only found best friends in each other but also found an everlasting community in all of us who reveled in their escapades and various misadventures throughout the years.”

GIANT DAYS: AS TIME GOES BY #1 is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to the acclaimed Giant Days series by creator John Allison, available now in bookstores everywhere with Giant Days Volumes 1-10 from John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin, special hardcover editions Giant Days: Not on the Test Volumes 1-3Giant Days: Early Registrationcollecting creator John Allison’s original self-published Giant Days stories, and Giant Days: Extra Credit, a collection of shorts and bonus material from the Eisner Award-nominated series. The First-Ever BUFFY & ANGEL Comic Book Event Begins in HELLMOUTH #1 From BOOM! Studios

Did not expect to see an event book from the new Buffy/Angel comics so soon, but I’m excited.

Discover The Historic New Buffyverse Event Series in October 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 1, 2019) – BOOM! Studios is proud to kick off The Road to San Diego, a ten-day,ten-announcement spotlight on the most exciting comic book and graphic novel news in advance of Comic Con International in San Diego (July 17–21), with the announcement today of the first-ever Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel event series HELLMOUTH. The five-issue series from writers Jordie Bellaire (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) & Jeremy Lambert (Doom Patrol) and artist Eleonora Carlini (Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers) brings Buffy and Angel face-to-face in the world-ending event hundreds of years in the making—the opening of the gates to the Hellmouth!

Buffy and her Scooby Gang will have to muster all their strength as they deal with an open Hellmouth that threatens the lives of everyone they love in Sunnydale. Meanwhile, Angel, the vampire cursed with a soul, arrives in town to find his redemption by doing whatever it takes to close the Hellmouth…and no human, demon or Slayer will stand in his way.

Jordie Bellaire is an Eisner Award-winning colorist best known for her work onBatman for DC Comics and Hawkeye for Marvel Entertainment, as well as for her Eisner-nominated writing debut, Redlands from Image Comics. She has worked on countless critically-acclaimed series for publishers such as Dark Horse, DC Comics, IDW, Image Comics, Marvel Entertainment, and Valiant.

“The Hellmouth is finally open and the wheels are coming off! I couldn’t be more thrilled to share this event with Jeremy Lambert, one of my closest friends in the universe, and Eleonora Carlini, whose art is just brilliant.”said writer Jordie Bellaire. “We’ve got a lot planned for readers!”

Jeremy Lambert is the co-writer of Doom Patrol with Gerard Way and writer of Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight. Originally from Bowie, Maryland, he now resides in Los Angeles, where he also produces films for Breakwater Studios, Ltd. in Los Feliz. He has also worked as an extras casting director for La La Land, Furious 7, True Blood, True Detective, and Magic Mike, among other films and shows.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite TV show of all time,” said writer Jeremy Lambert. “So when I heard Jordie’s pitch for this…well, first I had to lie down for a bit, but then I started jumping around like an idiot. I’m so excited to share what’s in store! Exploring the wealth of love and friendship in this series, the ties that bind the Scooby Gang, and pushing each and every one of them to the brink in HELLMOUTH is going to be terrifying–and an absolute joy. See you in Sunnydale… or what’s left of it?”

Eleonora Carlini is a comic book artist from Italy. She started her career working with several Italian publishers, then made her debut in American comics with Grimm Tales of Terror from Zenescope Entertainment and Doctor Who from Titan Comics. In 2015, she started to work with DC Comics, on Batgirl of Burnside, Green Arrow, Harley Quinn, and Suicide Squad. In 2017 and 2018, she collaborated on a new project for Aftershock Comics called Backways, written by Justin Jordan, as well as becoming the artist for Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers series from BOOM! Studios.

Buffy will always hold a piece of my heart,” said artist Eleonora Carlini. “I remember when I used to go to my grandmother’s house after school and have lunch in front of the TV because I didn’t want to miss a single note of the opening theme! This memory makes me smile every time. And now, so many years later, it’s an absolute thrill to be a part of this, working on HELLMOUTH.”

HELLMOUTH #1 features a main cover by fan favorite artist Jenny Frison (Wonder Woman), along with variant cover by acclaimed illustrator and movie poster artist Kyle Lambert (Stranger Things), as well as a variant cover by artists Kelly & Nichole Matthews (R.L. Stine’s Just Beyond) that connects to ANGEL #5 and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #8!

“Buffy and Angel’s paths were always headed for a head-on collision, and HELLMOUTH is where they finally meet face-to-face for the first time, although it’s not going to go necessarily how you might think,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Buffy’s got no reason to trust a vampire, even one with a soul, and she might have cost Angel the only chance he’d ever get to become a human again, so there’s bad blood between the two, meaning it’ll be twice as difficult to save the world from the HELLMOUTH as Buffy and Angel butt heads!”

HELLMOUTH is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; Faithless by Brian Azzarello and Maria Llovet; Abbott from Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä; Bury the Lede from Gaby Dunn and Claire Roe; Grass Kings from Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins; and Klaus from Grant Morrison and Dan Mora. The imprint also publishes popular licensed properties including Joss Whedon’s Firefly from Greg Pak and Dan McDaid; Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Jordie Bellaire and David López; Angel from Bryan Edward Hill and Gleb Melnikov; and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Ryan Parrott and Danielle Di Nicuolo.

Print copies of HELLMOUTH #1 will be available for sale on October 9, 2019 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.
