Cassie Hack, the Killer of Undead Killers, Sets Her Sights on The Crow!

The Crow: Hack/Slash Brings You the Bloodiest Face-Off in Comics, Courtesy of Tim Seeley, Jim Terry, and IDW Publishing

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 18, 2019) – Hack/Slash creator Tim Seeley brings his singular vision of horror – and his unique version of the “Final Girl” – to IDW in The Crow: Hack/Slash, a comic book crossover debuting in June. Illustrated by Tim Seeley with inks by returning Crow artist Jim Terry, this four-issue miniseries sees fan-favorite femme fatale Cassie Hack on the trailer of an all-new Crow… one unlike any that fans have seen before!

In The Crow: Hack/Slash #1, a soul is brought back… but something is terribly wrong! The resurrected Angeles Cero won’t stop killing on a quest for revenge, and the bodies are piling up. Now, slasher hunter Cassie Hack and her monstrous partner Vlad are on the trail of the Crow Killer, wrongly believing themselves in pursuit of a masked murderer they’ve hunted for years.

The Crow defined me as a fan of the comics medium, but also introduced me to a whole world of music and fashion that I’d never had access to before – one that completely fit the attitude my teenage brain was desperately looking for,” says Tim Seeley. “It introduced me to the idea that comics could tell dark and personal stories full of pain and beauty. No doubt about it – without O’Barr’s original The Crow, there would never have been a Hack/Slash. Mixing Cassie, Vlad, and The Crow has been in the making for 25 years, and my buddy Jim Terry and I cannot wait to unleash it on the world.”

Jim Terry says, “O’Barr’s The Crow was a turning point for me – his book brought me to indie comics and blew the doors off what I thought a comic could be. Years later, I’d become friends with James and eventually work on The Crow: Skinning the Wolves. It was my first published work and still among the best things I’ve done, and now I get to work in this universe again with my pal Tim Seeley. He’s a clever writer and a gifted storyteller, so I’m excited to take this ride and push some artistic limits!”

Issue #1 will feature a regular cover by Tim Seeley, with a variant edition by Rebekah A. Isaacs (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and a special “inked” variant by Seeley.

For information on how to secure copies of The Crow: Hack/Slash, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Terror Reigns in Celine Loup’s Graphic Novel

Below the press release I shall include an image from an earlier version of this book just so folks can see how absolutely beautiful Celine Loup‘s work is.

THE MAN WHO CAME DOWN THE ATTIC STAIRS From BOOM! Studios

Discover a Young Mother’s Fear of the Relentless Horror That Haunts Her Home in September 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 20, 2019) – BOOM! Studios today announced THE MAN WHO CAME DOWN THE ATTIC STAIRS, a new original graphic novel inspired by the works of Shirley Jackson and Ira Levin, in which acclaimed comics creator Celine Loup weaves a tale of horror and suspense that captures the isolation of postpartum depression, while exploring the very real fears associated with new motherhood. Arriving in stores September 2019.

Emma is excited to start a family in her new home, but after her child’s birth she finds her world turning upside-down. The infant cries like it’s scared of something, or someone, and Emma’s sleepless nights quickly drive a wedge between her and her husband, who seems uncharacteristically detached. When Emma begins to see strange things in the house, the line between reality and fantasy blurs and her grasp of what’s real and what’s not becomes even more clouded. Is something unnatural haunting the nursery? And what if it also affected her husband, who ventured up into the attic when they first arrived…

Celine Loup is an illustrator and Ignatz Award-nominated cartoonist who currently lives in France. She has done illustration work for The New York TimesThe New YorkerThe A.V. ClubVarietyLucky Peach, and Medium. Loup is the acclaimed creator of popular comics such as Honey and Mother, as well as her current ongoing series, Hestia. Her work has garnered an Ignatz Awards nomination, recognition on the Best American Comics “Notable Books” list,  and acclaim from American Illustration, The Society of Illustrators, and CMYK.

“I wanted to tell a story about a fear that women dare not speak aloud, not even to themselves, often until after it’s too late. Motherhood brings so much joy to the women who experience it, but for many it can feel like a prison, and no one can be certain until they’ve crossed a point of no return how it will be for them.” said creator, Celine Loup. “Horror’s greatest potential is the gift of empathy, and I hope THE MAN WHO CAME DOWN THE ATTIC STAIRS will create a space in which we can reach out to each other in times of personal crisis without fear of judgement.”

THE MAN WHO CAME DOWN THE ATTIC STAIRS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ ambitious Archaia imprint, home to graphic novels such as Mouse Guard by David Petersen; New World by David Jesus Vignolli; Jane by Aline Brosh McKenna and Ramón Pérez; About Betty’s Boob by Vero Cazot and Julie Rocheleau; Bolivar by Sean Rubin; and licensed series including Lev Grossman’s The Magicians: Alice’s Story by Lilah Sturges and Pius Bak; Jim Henson’s The Power of the Dark Crystal and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation.

“Celine’s work oozes with emotion. With a single look her characters reveal their humanity or, perhaps in this case, lack thereof,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Like the very best horror films, THE MAN WHO CAME DOWN THE ATTIC STAIRSconjures from its audience sincere empathy for its protagonist and a deep sense of unease for what lives within the shadows . . .”

Print copies of THE MAN WHO CAME DOWN THE ATTIC STAIRS will be available for sale September 18, 2019 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), September 24, 2019 at bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app

Follow the First Daughter’s Post-Punk Exploits in Marilyn Manor

IDW Wants to Know: “Where Were You in 1981?”

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 18, 2019) — Writer Magdalene Visaggio and artist Marley Zarcone invite you to the ultimate rager at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Marilyn Manor, a four-issue creator-owned miniseries from IDW Publishing, intended for mature readers!

When the White House goes dark for 17 days in August 1981, the president’s spoiled daughter and her best friend Abe – who claims to be possessed by the spirit of Abe Lincoln – throw the party of the decade, unearthing dead historical figures and government secrets that are better off buried. Sex, drugs, séances, and secret passageways lead to time-bending mystical romps where past and present collide.

“We’ve been trying to capture the feel, the excitement, the energy of the rise of the New Romantics, of the decade that embraced excess and excitement in hugely over-the-top ways, and filled it with chaos and insanity. This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever written in the best way possible, like an apocalypse directed by John Hughes,” says co-creator/writer Magdalene Visaggio.

Uniting the red-hot Eisner-nominated talents of Visaggio (Kim & Kim) and Zarcone (Shade, the Changing Girl) for the first time, Marilyn Manor explores identity, classism, appropriation, and friendship, set just in time for the greatest pop cultural marriage to date: the debut of MTV.

“There isn’t an artist alive who could perfectly capture the style and verve of the early ’80s like Marley Zarcone,” says editor Shelly Bond. “Coupled with Irma Kniivila’s vibrant palette, Marilyn Manoris for readers who like a bit of pop art and revisionist history with their coming-of-age satire.”

For information on how to secure copies of Marilyn Manor beginning with its launch issue in June, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Magdalene Vissagio is the Eisner and GLAAD Media Award-nominated writer behind Kim & Kim and Eternity Girl. She’s written comic books for most major publishers including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Oni.

Marley Zarcone is the artist on the critically-acclaimed series Shade, the Changing Girl for Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint. She is the co-creator/artist of Effigy with writer Tim Seeley for Vertigo, and has worked on numerous projects for Image.

Brii Combination Wrestling 3 Year Anniversary Pre-Hype

On March 22nd, 2019 (A Friday) my “home” wrestling company Brii Combination Wrestling will be celebrating their third anniversary in a show called 3 The Hard Way. The card lined up for this is absolutely amazing. Taking place a week before the huge Mania week in NYC where many companies from all over the US and even Japan will be putting on their biggest show BCW has been hard working to make sure this show will be as much a Brii-Mania (as it were). I am very proud of the work I’ve done at BCW over the last year in promoting before and after, running production at the shows and helping to make the entire show flows alongside our great staff; and I look forward to doing so again on this date.

With all that said let’s take in depth look at this amazing card.
(Sprinkled through out the post will be photos from over the year at BCW that I shot personally)

In a exhibition tag team bout from the company Pro Wrestling Magic the American Murder Society of Steve Off and Aaron Bradley will face “King of Drivers” Everett Cross and TJ Crawford. PWM and BCW are working on future collaborations, so this is a perfect chance for the audience to discover talent they may not be familiar with from other areas of the North East.

In a match in which two young talents make their BCW debut, Gabriel Skye will face off against Tristan Thai. These two are not just tag team partners, but also stable and training mates with the East Coast Syndicate of the Deady Saiyan Squad. Here in BCW though no free rides for the young and hungry. They’re going to have to prove themselves by fighting each other.

At our last show Riley Shepard was robbed of her chance to compete in the Queen of the North tournament and become the first BCW woman’s champion. Now she gets her chance to possibly rectify that in a #1 contender’s match against the woman Faye Jackson defeated to win that title in Tasha Steelz. These two ladies both have tons to fight for and will leave nothing in the ring.

The FEST Wrestling (out of Central Florida) Champion Saieve Al Sabah, ho made an amazing first time match in NYC at BCW is coming back and was granted permission to defend the title at 3 The Hard Way. He put out an open challenge and instead of one opponent though he ended up with three. Ace Andrews and Absolute Alvin Alvarez have been Brii Combination regulars who have shown what they can bring to the table every day. Joining this four way is member of The Skulk, Leon Ruff. AR Foxx has turned his crew in some of the toughest individuals around and with Ruff, Ace, Alvarez and champion Saieve in the mix this is going to be quite the contest.

Making their return to BCW are long time favorites Lance Lude, Rob Killjoy with their guidance, Coach Mikey collectively The Ugly Ducklings. Every appearance they have made in BCW has made them feel like true roster and family and it is really exciting to have them be back for our third anniversary. They won’t have an easy time of things though as they face rising stars and members of AR Foxx’s The Skulk, Leon Grey and Adrian Alanis. Every match on this show has the possibility of show stealer and this is no different.

In a rematch almost six years to date, former Brii Combination Wrestling champion Azrieal shall face the superstar A.R. Fox. These men are both very different men then they were six years ago. Fox is defending his prestige and his name, along with making sure his students The Skulk seem him do well while Azrieal feels he has something to prove especially after recent failings. Azrieal has all the skills and has become a much better talent since the last time these two met, but so has AR Fox, which just means, this will be a battle for the ages.

While we have tag matches, women’s matches, singles, four ways and more, there’s something for those fans who like a little more violence. The culmination of the war between The Deadly Saiyan Squad (Eric Jayden, Rick Rekon, Chris Barton and Dominic Denaro) and Frankie Flow’s Legendary Action Wrestling has reached a fever pitched through LAW and Brii Combination. It comes to an end as all four members of DSS team up against Flow and whoever he brings in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. People will be smashed, crashed, and destroyed in this brutal contest with no rules and plenty weapons. Deady Sayians scream of “Change Through Violence” and we shall see it cause LAW won’t go down without a fight.

The two titles of Brii Combination will both be in the line and the champions have their work cut of for them in these major defenses.

In her first match as champion, Faye Jackson will have the formidable opponent of someone she knows very well in the living legend Sumie Sakai. The two were once tag team partners and amazingly have never faced each other one on one. This has been building for three years, as Faye is having the best 2019 and one of the best years of her career she comes head to head with someone who can stop all her momentum because the now former Women of Honor champion is going to one some gold for herself and that Brii Combination Women’s Title is beautiful.

BCW World Champion Darius Carter won’t get to rest on his laurels in what will also be a first time match as he has to beat Austin Theory to keep his reign intact. Austin has had an impressive run, but also has had some pitfalls along the way. While still EVOLVE champion, he failed to capture more gold recently and has more and more opponents gunning for that EVOLVE title. Darius Carter might even be one of those people in the future, but first he must defend his BCW title successfully.

On top of all this great action there will also the regular love and camaraderie of an amazing audience but also an Anniversary wouldn’t be one without a party, so we shall be having one. An Afterparty that is, a Karaoke party hosted by the house podcast of Brii Combination, A Shot of Wrestling located just around the corner from the venue.

This is truly a not miss event. The chances of tickets at the door are very low so I suggest getting them now and them come Friday night, March 22nd prepare for the time of your life.

Tickets available on Eventbrite, Groupon, and direct from Brii Combination.

Announcing Canto, the Comic Book Fable of Clockwork Heroes and Enduring Hope

IDW Welcomes Adventurers of All Ages to an Otherworldly Odyssey Inspired by Dante’s Inferno and The Wizard of Oz

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 14, 2019) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce Canto, a surreal six-issue journey beginning in June. Created by writer David M. Booher and artist Drew Zucker and featuring the talents of colorist Vittorio Astone and letterer Deron Bennett, this all-ages comic book miniseries explores a strange and fantastic world in search of the greatest prize of all: a heart!

Enslaved for generations, Canto’s people once had hearts. Now they have clocks. When slavers damage a little tin girl’s clock beyond repair, Canto must brave the darkest corners of his hostile world to bring back her heart. Can he overcome the dangers that await to save the one he loves?

David M. Booher says, “We set out to create a character in Canto who finds hope where there seems to be none. Drew, Vittorio, and Deron have done a spectacular job bringing this world to life with Canto as its light. We couldn’t be happier to team up with IDW and have readers join us on his adventure.”

“Canto has been one of the great joys of my career to work on and see evolve,” says Drew Zucker. “It has been amazing to see a sketch that was done just for fun evolve into this amazing story and universe about finding hope in the bleakest of worlds. I can safely say there is something here for everyone.”

“When you think about myths and fables, you think about stories that have lessons to teach and that will resonate for years to come—and Canto absolutely fits that bill. The joy and awe that the team puts into every page—even when things seem dark—make this story last with you long after you put it down,” says Associate Editor David Mariotte.

For information on how to secure copies of Canto #1 – available with a regular cover by Zucker and a special variant by Nick Robles (Euthanauts) – please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Swords & Sisterhood Save the Day in A SPARROW’S ROAR Original Graphic Novel!

Discover a Thrilling Fantasy Epic About a Young Woman’s Journey to Save Her People in October 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 14, 2019) – BOOM! Studios today announced A SPARROW’S ROAR, a brand new original graphic novel from cartoonist C.R. Chua and co-writer Paolo Chikiamco about a young knight who must assume the identity of her sister in order to save her kingdom, which will debut in stores October 2019.

Elena of Esterpike is the revered commander of the most famed warriors in all the land— the legendary Lions of Esterpike. But when disaster strikes, it is her sister Per, a mere knight-in-training, who must gather allies in the face of an enemy even the Lions could not defeat. Together with the help of Elena’s second-in-command Amelia, Per takes on the role of her perfect older sister as she travels to the capital city to rally the troops and convince the generals of their neighboring city-states to provide aid against the oncoming horde. But she’ll have to stay on her toes as the poisonous intrigue of the court tears away at her secret identity and makes it that much harder to build the forces necessary to fend off the coming invasion.

C.R. Chua is an artist and illustrator who is interested in themes of identity, self-realizations and friendship. She has worked for BOOM! Studios as a colorist and artist on titles such as Adventure TimeSteven Universe, and Regular Show. She also illustrated the story Humanity in the Philippine National Book Award-nominated comic anthology,Mythspace.

“I’m excited to finally share A SPARROW’S ROAR with the world. At its core, it’s a story about brothers and sisters, about filling the spaces they leave behind, and about the power of a stubbornly awkward cog to wreck the most meticulously designed of machines,” said writer and artist, C.R. Chua. “I also love drawing ladies in armor very, very much.”

Paolo Chikiamco is a Filipino writer of prose, comics, and interactive fiction. His prose has been published in anthologies such as The Sea is Ours and the Best of Philippine Speculative Fiction, and his interactive wrestling novel Slammed! was released by Choice of Games. He has also served as a judge on multiple occasions for the Graphic Literature category of the National Book Awards in the Philippines.

“The women in my life have always been what society would dub as ‘strong’—but they were always simply women to me, and strength just an innate characteristic. Tina and I wanted to tell a story with a cast of women warriors, in a setting where they’d be notable for their skill rather than their sex,” said co-writer, Paolo Chikiamco. “With A SPARROW’S ROAR, we hope we can immerse readers in such a world… and then make them fear for its survival, of course.”

A SPARROW’S ROAR is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Avant-Guards by Carly Usdin and Noah Hayes; Misfit City by Kiwi Smith, Kurt Lustgarten, and Naomi Franquiz; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

A SPARROW’S ROAR is a beautiful fantasy tale, full of intrigue, dueling knights, and science that truly delves deep into the ideas of identity and what it takes to step up to the fight,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “The gorgeous illustrations and intriguing characters will instantly hook any fan of high fantasy and grand adventures!”

Print copies of A SPARROW’S ROAR will be available for sale in October 2019 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.
