SURPRISE! Joss Whedon’s ANGEL #0 Drops Next Wednesday
BOOM! Studios Makes Comic Book History With Unannounced Landmark Comic Book Launch In Just Eight Days!
The Vampire With A Soul Returns In Historic New Comics, Graphic Novels and More at the Award-Winning Publisher
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 9, 2019) – In a historic move, BOOM! Studios, in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products, today announced the first surprise series drop in the company’s history – ANGEL #0 will arrive exclusively at local comic shops worldwide on Wednesday, April 17th!
Though comic books are traditionally announced and solicited to retailers months in advance of release, the existence of ANGEL was kept a closely guarded secret by BOOM! Studios to create a true surprise drop that is 100% exclusive to local comic shops around the world (with no immediate digital distribution for two weeks). In order to meet expected fan demand, the first printing of ANGEL #0 will be shipped in equal quantities to the hotly anticipated release of Buffy The Vampire Slayer #4, which features the first appearance of the iconic vampire with a soul.
ANGEL #0 kicks off an all new monthly comic book series reimagining of the titular character in all new stories from the very beginning, with the all-star creative team of acclaimed writer Bryan Edward Hill (Batman, American Carnage) and Gleb Melnikov (Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), along with visionary writer and director Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Marvel’s The Avengers). This will be the first Angel release from BOOM! Studios as part of acquiring the comic book and graphic novel publishing license to officially expand the rich mythology created in television, novels and beyond.
Meet Angel – a vampire cursed with a soul who has spent centuries protecting humanity from the monsters that lurk in the dark…including himself. Now, looking for redemption for the atrocities committed by the monster he was when he was first turned at the age of 18, Angel stumbles upon a new demon uprising and a shocking truth: The restoration of his humanity can only come if he takes one more life: a certain Slayer from Sunnydale who he’s never met…but may now be his greatest enemy.
ANGEL #0 features a main cover and a special one-per-store “Thank You” variant cover, both by Mondo illustrator Boris Pelcer.
Bryan Edward Hill is a writer-filmmaker living in Los Angeles, who has previously written comic books including Detective Comics, Batman and The Outsiders and American Carnage for DC Entertainment; Killmonger for Marvel Entertainment; and is currently writing Titans for the DC Universe.
“ANGEL is a great opportunity to tell a story about the present, the past, redemption and most importantly…love,” said writer Bryan Edward Hill.
Created by visionary writer and director Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers film franchise), Angel premiered on the WB Network on October 5th, 1999 and was a spin-off from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The series ran for five seasons from 1999-2004, starring David Boreanaz as “Angel,” the tortured vampire destined to walk the earth with a soul who moved to LA to set up shop as a supernatural private investigator. Despite Angel’s best efforts to deal with the sins of his past all by himself, Angel Investigations soon became home to other lost souls searching for redemption and willing to fight by his side.
“Angel instantly connected with audiences worldwide because his very existence asks a question that resonates with all of us – is it possible to find redemption or are we forever defined by our pasts? Now, more than ever, it may be a question without any clear answer,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Bryan and Gleb are tackling that question head on, exploring a man quite literally combating the monster inside of him.. But even if Angel does find a way to cure his vampirism and put the horrors of his past behind him, it doesn’t mean he has a future ahead of him – especially if our favorite Slayer from Sunnydale has anything to say about it.”
ANGEL is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; Faithless by Brian Azzarello and Maria Llovet; Abbott from Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä; Bury The Lede from Gaby Dunn and Claire Roe; Grass Kings from Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins; and Klaus from Grant Morrison and Dan Mora. The imprint also publishes popular licensed properties including Joss Whedon’s Firefly from Greg Pak and Dan McDaid; Buffy The Vampire Slayer from Jordie Bellaire and David Lopez; and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Ryan Parrott and Danielle Di Nicuolo.
“Instead of simply announcing and releasing a new ANGEL series in all the expected ways, we wanted to do something truly special to mark the occasion, something that would drive fans exclusively to comic shops. The release of ANGEL #0, spinning out of our top-selling re-imagining of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, presented a perfect opportunity to generate nationwide excitement without the typical wait for the issue to hit stands months after an announcement,” said Arune Singh, VP Marketing, BOOM! Studios. “We want to thank our partners at Diamond Distributors for working with us to make sure that we could keep this secret till our announcement today. For any retailers that have questions about ANGEL #0 and details on subsequent issues of the series, please contact your BOOM! Studios or Diamond representative at your convenience.”

Get a Load of THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL From BOOM! Studios
PCS Note: This is gonna be awesome!
A New Art Book From the Creator of Beloved Cult Sensation The Goon in October 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 5, 2019) – BOOM! Studios today announced THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL, a brand new art book with scandalous tales, family gossip, illegally obtained medical records, behind-the-scenes character designs, sketches, and illustrations from the twisted mind of the creator of the acclaimed series, The Goon, available in stores October 2019. Celebrate an obscene number of years of low art and high art, failure and success, and the many other mistakes of multi-award winning writer and artist Eric Powell!
In Nashville, Tennessee lives a man, a recluse, a curmudgeonly high falutin’ cartoonist-type who, as a young child, had a penchant for drawing and making up tall tales. It was at the tender age of 18, he turned his back on a promising career in adult film cinematography and followed his heart into the comic book industry. Out of desperation, Eric kept drawing, painting, and then creating his own characters and worlds culminating with the beloved series, The Goon, currently celebrating its twentieth anniversary.
THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL sheds light on the deliberate and painstaking process of becoming a world renowned comic book creator as recalled by the artist and a few of his delinquent friends. This extensive art book spotlights never-before-seen childhood drawings, early superhero test pages, film poster art, and the establishment of Powell’s homegrown publishing house Albatross (Exploding) Funnybooks.
Eric Powell is an Eisner Award-winning writer and artist best known for his critically acclaimed series The Goon, which launched in 1999, and quickly became an indie hit with a die-hard cult following. In 2002, Powell launched his own publishing house, Albatross Exploding Funnybooks, which has been home to several creator-owned titles, including his own series Chimichanga and Hillbilly, as well as Rebecca Sugar’s Pug Davis, Fabian Rangel Jr. and Logan Faerber’s weird war tale ’Namwolf, and Brendon Small’s Galaktikon. In 2019, Powell relaunched The Goon at Albatross in coordination with the book’s 20th anniversary.
“Ten years ago I thought to myself, ‘I’m a multiple award-winning artist who has been at this for a while. It’s probably time to put out an art book.’ And since then many notable jag-offs have had art books published. Including Justin Bieber’s The Art of the Bieb: A Retrospective of Paintings I Made With My Butt. Unfortunately I did not get an art book. What I got is what I always get… THE SHAFT!” said creator Eric Powell. “But then my friend and editor Sierra Hahn said, ‘BOOM! Studios will do it.’ And here we are. On the verge of the publication of a biography about a backwoods idiot who taught himself how to draw pictures for money..”
“He said we were friends? Well, okay then. This fancy art book chronicles the artistic legacy of Eric Powell, a curmudgeon and one-of-a-kind storyteller,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “This book is the culmination of a lifetime of experience in the gutters and trenches of the comic book world and an inspiring how-to for up and coming cartoonists who can learn from his many mistakes . . . This book is also home to some of the best cartooning and painterly work I believe this industry has ever known (and that’s not sarcasm).”
THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL is the newest release from BOOM!
Print copies of THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL will be available for sale October 23, 2019 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.comto find the nearest one), October 29, 2019 at bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Wax On, Wax Off-35 Years and Beyond!
As the film The Karate Kid reaches its 35th Anniversary it is being celebrated in some wonderful ways.
If you’re lucky enough you may have been able to catch it in theaters again on March 31st (which has passed) or April 2nd if you’re reading this before than. Even if did miss the chance to see the Fathom Events 35th Anniversary Showing, just knowing the film returned to theaters for a short time is a big thing to appreciate, especially for the biggest of fans.
If you are a true fan of The Karate Kid, a true fan, you are aware that John Avildsen & Robert Mark Kamen did not create a simple tale revealing a young man learning karate and winning a tournament. There are layers to the story, layers going deep into the past of the characters, the emotional turmoil of their experiences, going way beyond “wax on, wax off” and into the deep complex meaning of man, soul, and love.
That didn’t stop Quirk Books from adding a Children’s adaptation to their POP Classics! line all wonderfully illustrated by Kim Smith and we should all be very thankful of that. Rebecca Gyllenhaal, assistant editor at Quirk stripped down the story turning it into a perfectly suitable story for kids and adults alike. While gone are the anger of Kreese, the love feud between Daniel and Johnny over Ali, the severe injury to Daniel-San’s leg, Mr Miyagi’s unusual past, or the real reasons Daniel and his mother moved to California to begin with, left is a fun and adorable tale of a young man learning karate to overcome bullies and feel better about himself. All with the always awesome art Kim provides.
The excellent Quirk book and return to theaters isn’t the only thing to celebrate in terms of Karate Kid 2 though as the second season of the absolutely excellent COBRAI KAI series comes to Youtube on April 24th. While Cobrai Kai is even more “adult” than the original films and a far departure from Quirk’s book, it had a first season that was everything I think Barney Stinson would appreciate. Johnny is the Karate Kid, Daniel-San is the bad guy, but as it was never that simple in the first film, things are not that simple in Cobra Kai. The set up for season two with Kreese’s return, Daniel focusing his energy on a dojo and the inner family conflicts between the LaRusso and Lawrence families building is so quality it really is not miss viewing.
So on April 2nd if you were able to see The Karate Kid in theaters, then on April 24 watch Cobra Kai on Youtube Red (and if you haven’t yet, binge season one as well). Then on May 7th get your hands on Quirk Books’ The Karate Kid Pop Classic and fall in love with the first film in a brand new way.
