Haunting Legends in New Series JIM HENSON’S THE STORYTELLER: GHOSTS from BOOM! Studios

Discover a Brand New Series of Captivating Tales That’ll Terrify and Delight in March 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 2, 2019) – BOOM! Studios announced today JIM HENSON’S THE STORYTELLER: GHOSTS, a brand new four-issue comic book series based on the Emmy Award-winning classic television show, Jim Henson’s The Storyteller, presenting several extraordinary folk tales of life after death. The first story from cartoonist Márk László and letterer Jim Campbell (Coda) about the perils of getting entangled in a ghost’s affairs, available in March 2020.

In Scandinavian folklore, there exists a vengeful ghost known as the Myling. A man traveling at night comes across a haunting cry from within the forest. He enters it to find a spirit who demands to be carried to its proper burial site. The man agrees, but as he travels forth, the spirit’s grip tightens… it grows in size…and the man moves slower and slower. Can he unburden himself of this terrifying weight before it brings him down for good?

JIM HENSON’S THE STORYTELLER: GHOSTS #1 features main cover art by artist Michael Walsh (Black Hammer/Justice League) and variant cover art by László.

“Ghosts can shock and terrify us, but they also can reveal something profound about loss, grief, and the value of life.” said Matthew Levine, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Storyteller: Ghosts aims higher than just what goes bump in the night. This diverse collection of supernatural folklore will present plenty of scares, but you might be surprised by how touching these tales can be. ”

JIM HENSON’S THE STORYTELLER: GHOSTS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ ambitious Archaia imprint, home to graphic novels such as Bolivar by Sean Rubin; Mouse Guard by David Petersen; Girl in the Himalayas and New World by David Jesus Vignolli; Jane by Aline Brosh McKenna and Ramón Pérez; Persephone by Loïc Locatelli-Kournwsky and licensed series including Lev Grossman’s The Magicians by Lilah Sturges and Pius Bak; Jim Henson’s The Power of the Dark Crystal and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation.

John Allison and Max Sarin Announce WICKED THINGS with BOOM! Studios in 2020

The Game’s Afoot as Acclaimed Giant Days Creative Team Returns with All New Limited Series in March 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 3, 2019) – BOOM! Studios is proud to announce  WICKED THINGS, reuniting the Eisner Award-winning team, writer John Allison (Steeple, Bad Machinery), artist Max Sarin, colorist Whitney Cogar, and letterer Jim Campbell for a new original six-issue series about everyone’s favorite young detective from the world of Giant Days: Charlotte Grote.

Nineteen year old Charlotte “Lottie” Grote has her whole life ahead of her; headed straight to university and a future as a real detective—until she’s framed for murder! Given the choice between going to jail basically forever or joining the police, Lottie decides to hit the beat, all while trying to find the real murderer. Lottie may have been running rings about the police since her 9th birthday, but she’s never been on this side of the security tape. Could the future of law enforcement be 5’2” with an extremely strong bangs game? Yes. Very yes.

Based in Letchworth Garden City, UK, John Allison is the creator of the comic series Giant Days, By Night, and Steeple, and of the all-ages book series Bad Machinery. In addition, he created the webcomics Bobbins and Scary Go Round, with his work appearing online since 1998. He was one of the first comic artists to build a daily following exclusively on the internet.

John’s various comics have been nominated for Eisner Awards every year from 2016-2019, and in 2018 he won the Best Long-Form Online Comic award from the US National Cartoonists’ Society. Giant Days has sold almost half a million copies worldwide, won Eisner Awards for Best Continuing Series and Best Humor Publication, and is currently being published in seven foreign language editions.

WICKED THINGS is a tale I’ve been waiting years to tell—the story of what happens when a precocious teen detective ages out of their division overnight. Lottie Grote is the crown jewel of my little comics universe, and I don’t think she could be in safer artistic hands than Max Sarin, whose work gets better every month.” said writer John Allison. “I’m delighted the GIANT DAYS team is back together so soon.”

Max Sarin is the National Cartoonist Award-winning comic book artist and illustrator from Finland who is known for their work on the Eisner Award-winning series Giant Days with creator John Allison.

“From Slice of Life to Slice of Crime! Some WICKED THINGS are coming our way!” said artist Max Sarin.

WICKED THINGS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; Heavy Vinyl by Carly Usdin and Nina Vakueva; b.b. free by Gabby Rivera and Royal Dunlap; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

“Sarah Grote’s little sister Lottie is all grown up, and now she’s a crime fighting teen who’s admittedly still running blindly into situations and getting into trouble. We meet her now as John and Max throw her right from the frying pan into the fire and the trouble Lottie gets into comes with a capital ‘T’,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “If you’re a fan of Giant Days, murder, mystery, mayhem—or all of the above—do yourself a favor and dive right in!”

Print copies of WICKED THINGS #1 will be available in March 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

Ghostrunner is a first-person hardcore cyberpunk adventure coming next year to Xbox One, PS4, and PC. It is created and developed by One More Level and published by All in! Games.

3D Realms, drawing on its knowledge and many years of experience in the FPS genre, will support the technical production and marketing of Ghostrunner. The company is known for their 30+ year legacy in the gaming industry, with games like Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D, Max Payne and, more recently, Ion Fury and WRATH. Ghostrunner fits with 3D Realms’ continued commitment to bringing great first-person action games to market.

In January, 3D Realms will showcase Ghostrunner in their booth at PAX South 2020 in San Antonio, Texas where it will be available to play for the first time in North America.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be working with the fantastic people at One More Level and All in! Games. When we were asked to step in, and produce Ghostrunner, we immediately jumped on board! Ghostrunner fits perfectly within 3D Realms’ legacy of great First Person Action games, and we believe we have a lot to offer,” said Scott Miller, Founder of 3D Realms.

All in! Games is a publishing house and development team creating and supporting unique games for PC and consoles. Apart from Ghostrunner, there are dozens of titles in their portfolio, including Tools Up! (The Knights of Unity) and Paradise Lost (PolyAmorous).

“We are thrilled to be working together with 3D Realms,” said Piotr Żygadło, COO of All in! Games. “We believe that this cooperation will benefit everyone involved in the production and release of the game. 3D Realms is a major company and has a history of many successful, popular titles. We’re aiming to make Ghostrunner the next big hit.”

“We’ve been fans of Ghostrunner since the initial reveal, so when we were offered the opportunity to help out, and co-develop the game alongside the incredibly talented developers from One More Level, we jumped at the opportunity,” said Frederik Schreiber, CEO at Slipgate Ironworks.

RAI THEME SONG FEATURING LYRICS BY DAN ABNETT

New York, NY (November 15th, 2019) – The brand-new RAI series makes its action-packed debut next Wednesday (November 20th), and metal band A Sound of Thunder is celebrating the can’t-miss comic with the song ‘Break Free!’

Featuring lyrics by series writer Dan Abnett, “Break Free” is offered exclusively through the band’s Kickstarter as a companion to their new album Parallel Eternity. The catchy single also comes with an exclusive RAI #1 variant cover by Paul Pelletier, which is an homage to Derek Riggs’ cover for Iron Maiden’s album Somewhere in Time. The limited edition variant is available with the modern trade dress (500 copies) and classic trade dress (200 copies).

Dan Abnett is a veteran of the comic industry, but this was his first time writing lyrics for a song! Here’s what he has to say about the new experience:

“I’ve never been asked to write lyrics before (though I’ve written a few songs over the years – never published or performed). It was, I guess, quite daunting to get a piece of music sent to me. A Sound of Thunder make a deliciously powerful noise… how could I write something worthy of that soaring music? How could I come up with anything that would work for Nina’s amazing voice?

First, I decided to try something ‘general’. I didn’t think it would be useful to tie the lyrics into anything story-specific with the new comic series, because plot advances all the time. I tried to think more about Rai’s over all situation: his background, his origin, his eternal clash with Father, so the song could be more of an anthem that worked for Rai generally, across his ‘career’. I also didn’t want to be too ‘on the nose’, and make the words too direct or specific.

My musical tastes are broad and eclectic. I listen to music a lot, but when I work it has to be ‘lyric free (soundtracks, ambient etc) so the ‘words’ don’t get in the way. Songs with lyrics tend to get airplay in the car, or when I’m not working. There was something about the track that made me think of old favourites, especially Rush, circa “Grace Under Pressure”…. The pace, the power of the drums, the muscular strength of the music. I thought it would be fun to do (try to do!) what a band like Rush did so well, which is to write a straight-up SF based track, nothing tongue in cheek or knowing, just unashamedly in its own world.

I listened to the file a lot, and wrote lyrics that I thought ‘fitted’…even adding timings. I am a complete amateur. The band’s first reaction was – unsurprisingly – that I’d written ‘too much”… that I’d covered every square inch of sound with words, too literally, filling in everything. To be fair, I always imagined that – at best – anything I wrote would be a simple springboard for their work. I didn’t expect it to be kept intact.

I guess I had a novice’s unwitting luck, because once they got in the studio and started to work on it, they ended up keeping a surprising amount…and even turning sections of the track that had been intended to be lyric-free into lyrical elements. I was delighted that they liked it and were inspired by it. I was even more delighted to hear the end result. It’s epic, and I have to admit I got chills hearing the band play and Nina power into the words. I am flattered that so much of my scrawling made it to the final cut.

I helped make a song, but the band did all the heavy lifting, and I hope I didn’t give them an uphill struggle. The track is better than anything I could have imagined. And in the process, they made me a fan. I’m a little bit in awe, to be honest. When you work with people who really know what they’re doing, and who have proper expertise in an area you know nothing about, its enlightening: to see something happen, to see the skillful ease with which they work a project into shape. It was fun, it was educational, and it was a privilege. We should all leave our creative comfort zones more often, and learn from the way other people do their things.

When can we do it again?”

Dark Horse Comics Previews OUR ENCOUNTERS WITH EVIL:  ADVENTURES OF PROFESSOR J.T. MEINHARDT AND HIS ASSISTANT MR. KNOX

The Sequel to The Acclaimed Graphic Novel MR. HIGGINS COMES HOME

Created by Mike Mignola and Acclaimed Artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell

(November 12, 2019) Ahead of its publication, Dark Horse Comics is previewing the original graphic novel OUR ENCOUNTERS WITH EVIL: ADVENTURES OF PROFESSOR J.T. MEINHARDT AND HIS ASSISTANT MR. KNOX. The highly anticipated book is the sequel to the acclaimed graphic novel MR. HIGGINS COMES HOME created by legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. In this all new installment, Professor J.T. Meinhardt and Mr. Knox continue their pursuit of ne’er-do-well creatures of the night. Now, backed by the dauntless vampire hunter Ms. Mary Van Sloan, the heroes pursue vampires, werewolves, and other horrors that even they are hard-put to name or explain. The only thing that’s for certain? The strange truths these adventurers uncover are seldom what they seem. Dark Horse will publish the hardcover graphic novel―created by Mike Mignola and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, with story and art by Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, lettering by Clem Robins and a cover by Mike Mignola with Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart―in comic shops on Wednesday, November 13th and in bookstores on November 26, 2019.

Like MR. HIGGINS COMES HOME, the new graphic novel is set outside the Hellboy Universe. “OUR ENCOUNTERS WITH EVIL recounts three adventures of our intrepid hunters as they battle evil in various supernatural forms, said Johnson-Cadwell. “The first of these, “The Lost Duke Kurtz,” is the possible discovery of a long-forgotten vampire menace and a tale of vampire vengeance. A typical not-so-typical night in the careers of Professor J. T. Meinhardt, Mr. Knox, and Ms. Mary Van Sloan.”

“Warwick brought an insane amount to energy and invention to MR.HIGGINS COMES home—more ideas than could ever fit into that one book, “ said Mignola , who scripted MR. HIGGINS COMES HOME which he created with Johnson-Cadwell. “So I was thrilled when he told me he wanted to continue the adventures of Meinhardt and Knox. You can look forward to a whole world of vampires and related monstrosities like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

Here’s what the critics are saying about the book:

“Hauntingly unique.”—FORBES

“Whimsical, dark, macabre… A treasure trove of gothic tales.”—FANBASE PRESS

“Satisfying horrific but refreshingly imaginative and playful.”—LIBRARY JOURNAL

“Sensational…. These standalone horror stories set just outside the Mignolaverse carry the colorful vibe and style of the classic old Hammer Dracula films.”—SYFY WIRE

“OUR ENCOUNTERS WITH EVIL draws it inspiration from a wide range of influences, namely Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stocker, Hammer Studios fifties and early sixties heyday and The Fearless Vampire Killers, but even though it affectionately wears all of its forbears on its blood soaked sleeves, it’s also an incredibly original, vibrant, whimsical and at times, comedic take on a much loved horror staple.”—MASS MOVEMENT

“A grand new graphic novel…. with a triple treat of supernatural stories.”—COMICON.COM

“An endlessly clever and surprisingly hilarious horror graphic novel. Mignola and Johnson-Cadwell have created a story that derives influence from literature and mythic monsters of old, and still stands on its own as a unique creation. Any fan of Gothic horror, classic monsters or even just witty humor are in for a definite treat.”—MONSTERS FIGHTING ROBOTS

“Incredibly dynamic and interesting.”—COMIC WATCH
