LOS ANGELES, CA (October 8, 2019) –  BOOM! Studios is proud to announce BODIE TROLL: HUNGRY FOR ADVENTURE, a brand new original graphic novel set in the world created by cartoonist Jay Fogsitt that brings the entire family a fantasy adventure that celebrates growing and evolving friendships, and the power in embracing what makes people unique.

Return to Hagadorn with an all-new original graphic novel featuring the friendliest (and, in his eyes, the fearsomest) troll around, Bodie! Get ready to join Bodie, his Fairy Godmother, and his best pal Cholly, as their adventures lead them to learn about Cholly’s past, uncover the mystery of the new bridge in town, and meet a group of creatures looking to destroy the world – through hugs.

Jay P. Fosgitt has created comics for many familiar properties, such as Sesame Street and Dreamworks Animation Magazine (Ape Entertainment), My Little Pony, G.I. Joe, Micronauts, and Transformers (IDW), Popeye (King Features), Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and Fraggle Rock (BOOM! Studios),  Betty and Veronica and Little Sabrina (Archie Comics), and Rocket Raccoon and GrootAvengers, Gwenpool, Web Warriors, Champions, Deadpool, Jessica Jones, Not Brand Echh. Lockjaw, and Spider-Geddon (Marvel Entertainment), and Jay has illustrated books for Disney.  Jay has also written and drawn his creator-owned titles Dead Duck and Zombie Chick (Source Point Press), Necronomicomics (Rue Morgue) and Bodie Troll (BOOM! Studios). He resides in Michigan with his cat, Goonie.

“I am thrilled to continue my grumpy little troll’s exploits in BODIE TROLL: HUNGRY FOR ADVENTURE! I crammed so much character, adventure, drama and silliness into the first book that so many continuing adventures (along with brand new ones) have spilled over and filled this new graphic novel.” said cartoonist, Jay Fosgitt. “I still hold fond memories of being read to as a little kid, and so many parents have told me how Bodie Troll has become required bedtime reading so I created HUNGRY FOR ADVENTURE with the intent of inspiring the sweetest and goofiest dreams a kid, or their parents, could have. Bodie Troll takes classic fairy tale tropes and manages to milk humor and heart out of them while still paying respect to such classic stories, so it’s fun for the storybook fan in all of us, be they long time readers, or open young minds with a heart for adventure.”

BODIE TROLL: HUNGRY FOR ADVENTURE is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning KaBOOM! imprint, home to comics for middle grade and younger readers including licensed series such as Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Regular Show, Ben 10, and Over The Garden Wall, along with original series like Just Beyond: The Scare School by R.L. The World’s Best Dog Goes on the Adventure of a Lifetime in BEAR by Ben Queen and Joe Todd-Stanton

Discover a Heartwarming Story About a Dog’s Devotion From the Writer of Pixar’s ‘Cars 2’ and ‘3’ in August 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 9, 2019) –  BOOM! Studios today announced the new original graphic novel BEAR—from Ben Queen, writer of Pixar’s Cars 2 and Cars 3 and creator of NBC television show A to Z, and children’s book author and illustrator Joe Todd-Stanton (A Mouse Called Julian), comes an all new adventure about making your way in the world with a little help from your friends.

Bear is a guide dog who loves looking out for his owner, Patrick. When they’re together, they make a great team, and Patrick feels like he can do anything! But one day, Bear’s vision suddenly vanishes and he also becomes blind. If he wants to stay by Patrick’s side, he feels he must do the impossible—find a way to regain his eyesight. When Bear hears about a magical spirit in the forest who could help, he embarks on an epic adventure that takes him from wild woodlands to busy city streets, where he meets new friends and learns to navigate new challenges, all while searching for his way back to his best friend.

Ben Queen was the creator and executive producer of the NBC half-hour comedies A to Z and Powerless. He previously wrote the Disney-Pixar films Cars 2 and Cars 3 as well as creating and executive producing the Fox action drama Drive.

“With BEAR I really wanted to create something that shows a world that we are familiar with, but in a completely new and original way. Joe Todd-Stanton’s illustrations take that unique lens and add a whole new level of imagination and joy,” said writer Ben Queen. “BEAR is a wonder-filled adventure about the deep bond of friendship. Plus talking animals! I guarantee you will not see the world the same way after you’ve seen it through the eyes of Bear.”

Joe Todd-Stanton grew up in Brighton and was taught how to draw by his mum. He has since been commissioned to work for clients such as Oxford University Press, Bloomsbury publishing and Penguin Random House. He has also written and illustrated his own series of books called Brownstone’s Mythical Collection.

“Bear’s story is an emotional roller coaster that brings to mind those great self-discovery adventure movies from the ‘80s like Stand by Me or The Goonies, except this story has evil raccoons and a dog the size of an American black bear—what’s not to love?!” said artist Joe Todd-Stanton.

BEAR is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ ambitious Archaia imprint, home to graphic novels such as Bolivar by Sean Rubin; Mouse Guard by David Petersen; Girl in the Himalayas by David Jesus Vignolli; Jane by Aline Brosh McKenna and Ramón Pérez; and licensed series including Lev Grossman’s The Magicians: Alice’s Story by Lilah Sturges and Pius Bak; Jim Henson’s The Power of the Dark Crystal and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation.

“Ben and Joe tug at the heartstrings with this touching story of a dog’s devotion to his best friend and the lengths he’s willing to go to take care of him,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Readers of all ages will get swept up in Bear and his transcendent journey as he learns new ways to navigate the world.”

Print copies of BEAR will be available for sale in August 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app..

COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY LEGEND JIM SHOOTER BRINGS NEW TITLE SLOW CITY BLUES TO IMAGE COMICS

As Pop-Culture Spectrum has been away attending Twitchcon 2019 they are catching up on news delivered during the days they were away.

ABOVE: interior artwork from the forthcoming Slow City Blues.
PORTLAND, Ore. 09/24/2019 — Image Comics is thrilled to announce an all-new, ongoing genre-bending series by writer Samuel Haine, penciler Shawn Moll, inker John Livesay, colorist JD Smith, and letterer Thomas Mauer, who have teamed up with comic book industry icon Jim Shooter for—Slow City Blues—set to launch February 2020.

“This is a dream come true. I would have never imagined in a million years that the fantastical world of Slow City Blues, that I came up with while I was slingin’ beers as a bartender, would be brought to life by the caliber of talent Livesay brought together. I could gush about our team for hours if you let me! I mean for cryin’ out loud, I get to work with Jim Shooter. JIM FREAKIN’ SHOOTER! He’s been instrumental in helping us realize a rich world full of kooky, complex characters and deep emotional resonance. Not to mention that he and Livesay were able to convince some of the greatest artists of all time to do covers for the book,” said Haine. “It’s a surreal feeling being able to put your very first comic book out into the world through a publisher as prolific as Image. A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and love have gone into these books, and I’m so grateful to everybody involved. It’s been one hell of a wild ride and I am very excited to have the opportunity to share it with everyone!”

Slow City Blues brings you everything you crave in a comic book: action, adventure, suspense, fantasy, tragedy, and plenty of humor. The story is focused on Detective John Loris, who gets trapped inside his imagination after accidentally killing a little girl in the line of duty. After trying to take his own life, John instead ends up in Slow City, a construct of his mind’s eye, a place where anything and everything is possible, except a way out.

Livesay added: “I read the story, I knew it was good, so I figured the best idea was to bring in the best talent.”

John Loris is both revered and reviled as The Creator, but in Slow City, even God is just another slob. So, he does the only thing he knows how: Be a cop. But times are changing and the wheels in his mind are in motion. And now, John and his partner, a six foot six, smart-ass skunk, must solve a double homicide and bring the killer to justice before a gang war between the Gorillas of the Devil’s Backbone and the Dragons of the Midnight Syndicate destroy Slow City.

“There are three aspects to creation. Analysis, which is breaking down already created stuff. Synthesis, which is recombining stuff in a variant way. And genesis, which is making something new. To accomplish genesis is rare. Sam, does genesis. He writes well. He has other great creators with him. Slow City Blues is a phenomenon. I contributed not much, but yelled at Sam a lot, and he thanked me, which speaks well of him or poorly of me. Honor this work. It deserves your attention,” said Shooter.

In a world of pure imagination, what could possibly go wrong?

Slow City Blues #1 will hit local comic shops on Wednesday, February 19.

Slow City Blues #1 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

For updates on the new series, follow on Twitter & Instagram.

Simon Spurrier Announces Brand New Series ALIENATED at New York Comic Con BOOM! Studios Panel

Discover a Brand New Original Series from the Acclaimed Writer of Coda in February 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 4, 2019) –  BOOM! Studios today announced at the New York Comic Con Discover Yours panel, a new original series ALIENATED. From acclaimed writer Simon Spurrier (John Constantine Hellblazer, Coda) and artist Chris Wildgoose (Batgirl, Batman: Nightwalker), comes a subversive coming-of-age story about about having all the power to change the world but the unready hands to truly wield it, available in February 2020.

Three teenagers, each an outcast in their own way, stumble upon an unearthly entity as it’s born. As they bond over this shared secret and the creature’s incredible abilities, it becomes clear to the teenagers that their cute little pet is a predator in the making—and it’s in need of prey. Guided by the best intentions at first, the teens’ decisions soon become corrupted by adolescent desires, small town jealousies, and internal rivalries, sending them into a catastrophic spiral of their own making.

Simon “Si” Spurrier is an Eisner-nominated writer of novels, television shows, and comics. He is known for his work on Marvel and DC Comics series, including X-Men, Star Wars, Suicide Squad, and the forthcoming relaunch of Hellblazer, while his creator-owned projects include BOOM! Studios hits such as Coda, The Spire, and Six-Gun Gorilla.

“I always wondered what would’ve happened if E.T. had been befriended by someone a little less… nice. Someone with issues. Someone with rage and uncertainty and insecurity and big ideas, waiting to be tested. A teenager, basically. Or better yet, three of them. Then again, I always wondered what would’ve happened if E.T. himself had been a bit more, y’know. Alien. As in: ineffably strange. And terrifying,” said writer Simon Spurrier. “ALIENATED answers both questions. It’s my take on the classic coming-of-age high school tale, by which I mean it’s got as much vicious toxicity about it as it has awkwardness and heart. Some kids find pirate treasure, some kids find a dead body on the train tracks; these kids find an nth-dimensional psychic entity which hungers for brainwaves. Mischief and murder ensues.”

Chris Wildgoose is a comic book and film concept artist known for his work on Batgirl: Rebirth, Batman: Nightwalker, Gotham Academy for DC Comics and the Porcelain series.

“This is a dream team project for me. I’ve been hoping I would have the chance to work with Simon Spurrier and Eric Harburn for years, and finally our paths have aligned. I am so looking forward to seeing what people think of ALIENATED,” said artist Chris Wildgoose. “We have some fresh approaches to tell the story of these three outcast teenagers who are pulled together by the unpredictable power of an alien force. I think it’s a story that will pull on your heartstrings and make you laugh, with a nice bit of cosmic horror thrown in for good measure—all wrapped in a high school drama. It’s quite the mix!”

ALIENATED is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera; Faithless by Brian Azzarello and Maria Llovet; Abbott by Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä; Bury The Lede by Gaby Dunn and Claire Roe; Klaus by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora; and the upcoming Folklords by Matt Kindt and Matt Smith and The Red Mother by Jeremy Haun and Danny Luckert. The imprint also publishes popular licensed properties including Joss Whedon’s Firefly from Greg Pak and Dan McDaid; Buffy The Vampire Slayer from Jordie Bellaire and David López; Angel from Bryan Edward Hill and Gleb Melnikov; and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Ryan Parrott and Daniele Di Nicuolo.

“A new project with Si is always cause for celebration—doubly so when Chris is involved, after years of trying to work together,” said Eric Harburn, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “This new series is a thrillingly dark story of first contact and the burden of responsibility wrapped around the timely, complicated question: will the kids be alright? It’s intense, emotional, and resonant in all the ways you’ve come to expect from these two visionary creators.”

Print copies of ALIENATED #1 will be available for sale February 2020 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.
