Sweet Westworld O’Mine

She’s got a smile it seems to me reminds me of childhood memories where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky. Now and then when I see her face, she takes me away to that special place and if I’d stare too long I’d probably break down and cry. She’s got eyes of the bluest skies as if they thought of rain. I hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain. Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place where as a child I’d hide and pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by. Where do we go now?

Reedpop Announces Annual Children’s Book & Author Breakfast Lineup at BookExpo 2020

Judy Blume, Natalie Portman, Marie Lu, Raj Haldar, Misty Copeland, and Kwame Mbalia Grace the Stage to Discuss their Upcoming Books

Norwalk, CT, February 18, 2020: Reedpop’s BookExpo today unveiled the lineup for the Children’s Book & Author Breakfast, its annual event that showcases several of literature’s most esteemed children’s and young adult authors. The Children’s Book & Author Breakfast (Friday May 29, 2020) continues to be one of the most sought-after annual events of BookExpo, drawing over 1,000 attendees each year for a morning of lively conversation with literary giants and celebrity authors. This breakfast is sponsored by Candlewick Press.

This year’s breakfast will be hosted by renowned author Judy Blume as she celebrates the 50th anniversary of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., her seminal novel which famously confronts issues about religious affiliations and early adolescence. Blume will discuss the importance of the novel in her own life and how it influenced thousands of young readers. Additionally, as host of the breakfast, Blume will not only introduce the other authors, but will also moderate a discussion among them.

Misty Copeland, who made history by becoming the first African American female principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, will introduce the audience to Bunheads, the first in a series of picture books inspired by her own early experiences in ballet. In her first picture book since the bestselling and award-winning Firebird, Copeland tells the story of a young Misty discovering her love for dance through the ballet of Coppélia. The book, illustrated by Setor Fiadzigbey, boasts themes of teamwork, friendship, dedication, and hard work, as Copeland hopes children everywhere will be inspired to reach for their dreams.

Academy Award ® winning actress, director, producer and activist Natalie Portman will discuss Natalie Portman’s Fables, her upcoming book which retells three classic fairytales and imbues them with empathy and humor. Her new takes of The Tortoise and the Hare, The Three Little Pigs, and Country Mouse and City Mouse are perfect for reading aloud and are sure to become beloved additions to family libraries.

Raj Haldar, the #1 New York Times  bestselling author of P is for Pterodactyl who’s also known by his stage name, Lushlife, joins the breakfast to showcase another hilarious fresh look at the English language. No Reading Allowed pokes fun at the English language, as it joyfully teaches young readers about homophones, homonyms, and tricky punctuation. This picture book’s illustrations provide clues to understanding the meanings behind wily words and confusing phrases, so readers will no longer be tricked by phrases like “C Major, it’s a beautiful key! / See Major, it’s a beautiful quay!”

Marie Lu, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series, will introduce the BookExpo audience to Skyhunter, her new novel in which she imagines an immersive world broken by war, where danger waits around every corner and loyalty is life. Lu focuses on the evolution of the dystopian genre, how our relationships with these stories have shifted in light of real-world trauma, and how she hopes these stories can affect positive change.

Finally, Kwame Mbalia follows-up his best-selling Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky with Tristan Strong Destroys the World featuring characters from African-American folklore. Bestselling author Rick Riordan presents this second book in the Tristan Strong trilogy which features the title character, just back from a victorious but exhausting adventure in Alke, the land of African American folk heroes and African gods, suffering from PTSD but unable rest as he faces a new challenge of survival.

Taking place Friday, May 29, 2020, the BookExpo Children’s Book & Author Breakfast will again kick off the final day of BookExpo, the must-attend destination for the publishing industry.

“The Children’s Book & Author Breakfast showcases the diversity of genres, book types, authors, and publishers within the world of children’s and young adult literature,” said Jennifer Martin, Event Director of BookExpo. “We’re extraordinarily thrilled to have such a varied group of authors who will bring such unique and different perspectives to our show. We know all our attendees will walk away with valuable insights about how these books, and ones like them, can help their own bookstores, libraries, and retail shops.”

The Children’s Book & Author breakfast compliments an exciting line-up of children’s publishers and exhibitors on the show floor including Candlewick Press, Charlesbridge Publishing, Lerner Publishing Group, Disney Worldwide Publishing, Phidal Publishing, Cottage Door Press, Peachtree Publishing Company, Publications International, Melissa & Doug, and MerryMakers.

BOOM! Studios Reveals New Cover for SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE Graphic Novel

Discover an All New Way of Looking at Author Kurt Vonnegut’s Seminal Masterpiece in September 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 10, 2020) – BOOM! Studios today revealed a new cover by Albert Monteys with Scott Newman for the brand new graphic novel, SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE. An American classic and one of the world’s seminal anti-war novels, Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five is faithfully presented in graphic novel form for the first time by Eisner Award-winning writer Ryan North (How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Albert Monteys (Universe!) with color assistance by Ricard Zaplana, available in stores September 2020.

Listen: Billy Pilgrim has…
…read Kilgore Trout
…opened a successful optometry business
…built a loving family
…witnessed the firebombing of Dresden
…traveled to the planet Tralfamadore
…met Kurt Vonnegut
…come unstuck in time.

Billy Pilgrim’s journey is at once a farcical look at the horror and tragedy of war where children are placed on the frontlines and die (so it goes), and a moving examination of what it means to be fallibly human.

Kurt Vonnegut’s black humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959, and established him as “a true artist” (The New York Times) with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. He was, as Graham Greene declared, “one of the best living American writers.” Kurt Vonnegut died in 2007.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning Archaia imprint, home to inspiring graphic novels such as Big Black: Stand at Attica by Frank “Big Black” Smith, Jared Reinmuth, and Ameziane, We Served the People by Emei Burell, The Realist by Asaf Hanuka, Girl on Film by Cecil Castellucci and Vicky Leta, Melissa Duffy, V. Gagnon & Jon Berg, New World by David Jesus Vignolli, About Betty’s Boob by Vero Cazot and Julie Rocheleau, Waves by Ingrid Chabbert and Carole Maurel, The Grand Abyss Hotel by Marcos Prior and David Rubín, and more.

Print copies of SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE will be available for sale on September 9, 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one),  September 15, 2020 at bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

Reedpop Announces Annual Adult Book & Author Breakfast Lineup at BookExpo 2020

Zerlina Maxwell, Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, Carmen Maria Machado, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Rebecca Roanhorse Unveil Political Commentaries and Memoirs, Poetry Anthologies, and Fantasy Novels and Thrillers

Norwalk, CT, February 10, 2020: Five of the most important and varied voices in 2020 adult literature will take the stage together for the annual Adult Book & Author Breakfast on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at BookExpo. Radio host and television political analyst Zerlina Maxwell will host this highly anticipated event. She’ll be joined by United States Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, Carmen Maria Machado, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Rebecca Roanhorse, during which each author will draw from their diverse backgrounds and perspectives to discuss their latest books and initiatives.

Zerlina Maxwell is an MSNBC Political Analyst, Senior Director of Progressive Programming for SiriusXM and the co-host of the award-winning radio show, Signal Boost. She’s a former Hillary Clinton staffer and worked as an organizer for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. In her new book of political commentary, The End of White Politics: How to Heal Our Liberal Divide (Hachette Book Group), Maxwell dismantles the past and present problems of the Left — challenging the “Bernie Bros,” Joe Biden, and centrist-thinkers, and argues how liberals can use identity politics to win upcoming elections. Instead of turning away from identity politics, she examines how progressives can lean into it to unite in a common vision and make progressive politics into a winning movement.

Best known for her acclaimed memoir Crazy Brave and her best-selling poetry volume An American Sunrise, Joy Harjo has received prizes including the Wallace Stevens Award, the Jackson Poetry Prize, the Ruth Lilly Prize, the William Carlos Williams Award, and the American Indian Distinguished Achievement in the Arts award, among others. The first Native American U.S. Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo now presents When the Light of the World was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through, A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. This anthology gathers the work of more than 160 poets, representing nearly 100 indigenous nations, into one momentous volume that celebrates the indigenous peoples of North America, the first poets of this country, whose literary traditions stretch back centuries.

Award-winning, bestselling horror writer Carmen Maria Machado (Her Body and Other Parties, In the Dream House) presents her comic book debut, The Low, Low Woods. Published by DC as part of horror icon Joe Hill’s Hill House Comics imprint, the series is a surreal and harrowing journey of two queer teenagers, El and Octavia, who are discovering the mystery behind their home of Shudder-To-Think, PA, a town where long abandoned coal mines still burn underground and the surrounding woods are thick with rabbits with human eyes, swaths of men without their skins, and a woman with deer antlers.

U.S. Representative for Minnesota Ilhan Omar unveils This Is What America Looks Like (Dey Street Books), an intimate and rousing memoir about her life as the first African refugee, the first Somali-American, and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Her memoir touches on numerous urgent and current issues while describing her upbringing, how war broke out in Somalia, her life in a Kenyan refugee camp, her arrival in this country where she pursued an education and the American dream, her commitment to public service first as a community organizer and later running for office, while also raising three children and navigating the needs of her tight-knit family.

Finally, Rebecca Roanhorse showcases her fantasy novel Black Sun (Saga Press), the first installment of a new epic fantasy trilogy inspired by the Anasazi cliff dwellings and the Mayan and Aztec cultures, that tells the story of four warring matriarchies battling for power with political intrigue and deadly schemes. Roanhorse, renowned for Trail of Lightning, Storm of Locusts, and Star Wars: Resistance Reborn, is a Nebula, Hugo, Locus and Campbell Award-winning speculative fiction writer. A busy and prolific writer, her middle grade novel Race to the Sun for the Rick Riordan Presents imprint released in January while Black Sun follows in October 2020.

“We’re humbled to be able to showcase such a powerful group of authors whose latest works come from such varied and meaningful perspectives,” said Jennifer Martin, Event Director of BookExpo. “The Adult Book & Author Breakfast allows us to bring together important writers who reflect the current publishing climate, and I can’t wait for out attendees to learn from their invaluable insights.”

Registration for BookExpo is open now with special early bird pricing through April 28.
