BOOM! Studios Announces BIG BLACK: STAND AT ATTICA Winter Book Tour With Co-Writer Jared Reinmuth

“This penetrating portrait of a broken correctional system and a flawed man focuses on his legacy of courage, which towers over the forces stacked against him.”-Publishers Weekly Starred Review

“Sure to be one of the most discussed books this year.” – Library Journal Starred Review

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 31, 2020) – BOOM! Studios today announced the BIG BLACK: STAND AT ATTICA Winter Book Tour, in support of the new graphic memoir written by Frank “Big Black” Smith and Jared Reinmuth and illustrated by Améziane (Muhammad Ali), available everywhere books are sold on February 18, 2020.

BIG BLACK: STAND AT ATTICA is an unflinching look at the true story about the price of standing up to injustice in what remains one of the bloodiest civil rights confrontations in American history, told for the very first time from the man at the center of it all – Frank “Big Black” Smith. Co-writer Jared Reinmuth will visit bookstores and libraries across New York state to meet with readers and sign copies of this historic release, with select appearances by special guests Daniel Meyers, one of the key lawyers in the decades-long lawsuit following the events of the 1971 Attica Prison Uprising, and Pearl “Battle” Smith, Frank “Big Black” Smith’s wife.

In the summer of 1971, New York’s Attica State Prison was a symbol of everything broken in America – prisoner abuse, rampant racism and a blind eye turned towards the injustices perpetrated on the powerless. But when the guards at Attica overreacted to a minor incident, the prisoners decided they’d had enough – and revolted against their jailers, taking them hostage and making demands for humane conditions.

A natural leader, Frank “Big Black” Smith found himself at the center of this uprising, struggling to protect hostages, prisoners and negotiators alike. But when the only avenue for justice seemed to be negotiating with Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Big Black soon discovered that a peaceful resolution for the prisoners in Attica was unattainable.

The BIG BLACK: STAND AT ATTICA Winter Book Tour stops include several locations, beginning with the New York City institution, Strand Bookstore, on February 17, to celebrate the release of the graphic memoir.

Monday, February 17, 2020, New York City NY: 7:00-8:00pm at Strand Bookstore, with special guests Daniel Meyers and Pearl “Battle” Smith, and moderator Victor LaValle, acclaimed author of The Changeling and Victor LaValle’s Destroyer
Saturday, February 22, 2020, New York City, NY: 3:00pm at NYPL – Grand Central Branch, with special guests Daniel Meyers and Pearl “Battle” Smith, and moderator Susen Shi, Senior Librarian

BOOK TWO OF EISNER AWARD-NOMINATED, YOUNG ADULT GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES NORROWAY—THE QUEEN ON THE HIGH MOUNTAIN—WILL HIT SHELVES FROM IMAGE COMICS THIS AUGUST

PORTLAND, Ore. 01/13/2020 — Bestselling creative team of writer Cat Seaton and artist Kit Seaton (Wonder Woman: Warbringer, Afar) return to the Eisner Award-nominated, critically acclaimed, graphic novel trilogy Norroway with Book Two: The Queen on the High Mountain.

This second book in the lauded series continues the Scottish fairytale retelling with charm and whimsy and is perfect for fans of Jen Wang’s The Prince and The Dressmaker. It hits shelves from Image Comics this August 2020.

“I’m really thrilled to showcase an older, wizened, more grizzled Sibylla,” said Kit Seaton. “Plus there’s a new cast of characters who will add depth, as well as twists and turns to the narrative. We’ve really taken the story to new heights (pun intended) and can’t wait to show readers this widened view of the world of Norroway.”

Seven years have passed since the disastrous events of Norroway, Book One, and now it’s time for Sibylla to face her curse-breaking destiny. When Troll Kingdom soldiers arrive in the once-safe town of Fiskeby, she’s forced to flee up the Glass Mountain. But the moment she steps foot on Troll lands, she’s thrown into a jail cell, where she discovers her amnesiac ex-fiancé is set to wed the Troll Queen’s daughter. Using all of her wits, she must convince the princess to turn against her own mother, or else face execution on the day of the wedding—and doom the kingdom to remain cursed forever.

Cat Seaton added: “In this book we really start to break free of the mold of the original fairy tale—most of the set up has happened, and now we’re seeing the payoff, and the consequences. Canonically, it’s seven years between the lead character’s fall down the mountain and her climb back up. In the original fairy tale you have a girl who waited. With Sibylla, she stopped waiting. She moved on. And then her past came knocking.”

Norroway, Book Two: The Queen on the High Mountain (ISBN: 978-1-5343-1607-2) will be available on Wednesday, August 26 and in bookstores on Tuesday, September 1. It can be pre-ordered at your local comic book shop or on AmazonBarnes & NobleBooks-a-MillionIndieBound, and Indigo.

Norroway, Book Two will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

Norroway, Book One: The Black Bull of Norroway (ISBN: 978-1534308558) remains available wherever books are sold, including comic book shops and on AmazonBarnes & NobleBooks-a-MillionIndieBound, and Indigo.

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 13, 2020) – BOOM! Studios announced today a brand new original graphic novel, FOREVER HOME, from cartoonist Jenna Ayoub (Adventure Time), an all-new story about finding your place and learning to love where you are, available in November 2020.

Willow has had a nomadic childhood—with two parents in the military, staying put has become a pipe dream. And when the family arrives at their latest stop— the historic Hadleigh House— Willow encounters something that doesn’t help her chances of finding home… ghosts!

Hadleigh House’s spectral residents have been scaring off would-be homebuyers for decades, and they intend to keep the house to themselves. But Willow’s not about to let some nagging spirits force her to move for the millionth time. As Willow spends time in the house and gains the ghosts’ respect through her own strong will to stay in the house no matter what, they find that all of them belong there. Together, the restless spirits are finally able to find some peace, and Willow finds a home.

Then it’s just a matter of convincing Willow’s parents that this old house is the one for them- ghosts included.

Jenna Ayoub is a comic artist and writer who began her career as an inker and has since worked as an illustrator for comic book series including, Adventure Time, Regular Show, and The Amazing World of Gumball with BOOM! Studios. Her latest project is the graphic novel FOREVER HOME, which she has both written and illustrated.

FOREVER HOME has been a very fun, and very personal project for me. It has given me the chance to pay homage to the spirits that I love—many of whom are actually still alive and hopefully will appreciate the little parts that they contributed to this story,” said cartoonist Jenna Ayoub. “I’m very excited to bring this adventure to life, and hope that it will bring readers as much joy as it has brought me.”

FOREVER HOME is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning KaBOOM! Imprint, home to comics for middle grade and younger readers including original series like Just Beyond by R.L. Stine and Kelly & Nichole Matthews, Hex Vet by Sam Davies, RuinWorld by Derek Laufman, Hotel Dare by Terry Blas and Claudia Aguirre, Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard and Kelly & Nichole Matthews, as well as Wonder Pony by Marie Spénale and the upcoming Space Bear by Ethan Young, along with licensed series such as Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Regular Show, Ben 10, and Over the Garden Wall.

“I’ve been excited about this book since the pitch first came in, and now having the chance to work with Jenna and watch her bring Willow and the charming, funny, and heartfelt world of FOREVER HOME to life is an absolute joy,” said Bryce Carlson, Vice President, Editorial & Creative Strategy, BOOM! Studios. “Jenna is an incredible talent whose debut graphic novel weaves a heartwarming tale about a young girl who finally finds a place she can call home and the lengths she’ll go to protect the place—and those living and unliving inside—that she loves.”

BOOM! Studios Announces SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE Graphic Novel By Ryan North and Albert Monteys

Super excited for this adaptation.

Discover an All New Way of Looking at Author Kurt Vonnegut’s Seminal Masterpiece in September 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 8, 2020) – BOOM! Studios today announced a brand new graphic novel, SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE. An American classic and one of the world’s seminal anti-war novels, Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five is faithfully presented in graphic novel form for the first time by Eisner Award-winning writer Ryan North (How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Albert Monteys (Universe!) with color assistance by Ricard Zaplana, available in stores September 2020.

Listen: Billy Pilgrim has…

…read Kilgore Trout
…opened a successful optometry business
…built a loving family
…witnessed the firebombing of Dresden
…traveled to the planet Tralfamadore
…met Kurt Vonnegut

…come unstuck in time.

Billy Pilgrim’s journey is at once a farcical look at the horror and tragedy of war where children are placed on the frontlines and die (so it goes), and a moving examination of what it means to be fallibly human.

Kurt Vonnegut’s black humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959, and established him as “a true artist” (The New York Times) with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. He was, as Graham Greene declared, “one of the best living American writers.” Kurt Vonnegut died in 2007.

Ryan North is the writer responsible for Dinosaur Comics, the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning Adventure Time comic book series for BOOM! Studios, the bestselling anthology series Machine of Death and the New York Times bestselling and Eisner-Award winning Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series for Marvel Comics. North has also written a New York Times bestselling series of choose-your-own-adventure books based on Shakespeare’s classic plays Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. His latest book, How to Invent Everything, is nothing less than a complete cheat sheet for civilization. North currently resides in Toronto, Canada.

“Like most people, Kurt Vonnegut has been one of my favourite writers since I first read his books decades ago, and it’s been such an honour—and challenge—to adapt his most famous work for a new medium. Slaughterhouse-Five is a deeply funny and deeply moving book, and my goal with this project was to keep all of that, while still making something that feels at home in this medium,” said writer Ryan North. “I picture it as a window into an alternate universe where Kurt (and Kilgore Trout) worked in comics instead of prose. Every medium can do things that others can’t, I’m beyond excited to share this new version of Slaughterhouse-Five with you very soon.”

Albert Monteys is a Spanish graphic novelist and illustrator, best known for his work in El Jueves, a weekly satirical magazine that he directed from 2006 until 2011. Monteys also created the series Carlitos Fax for the children’s magazine Mister K. In 2014, he founded a satirical monthly publication Orgullo y Satisfaccion (Pride and Satisfaction) with several other cartoonists, and began to publish a science fiction comic, ¡Universo! (Universe!) in Panel Syndicate, winning a 2017 Eisner Award nomination for Best Digital Comic.

“What a challenge, what an opportunity! When I was presented with the chance to collaborate in the graphic novel adaptation of Slaughterhouse-Five my first reaction was ‘this is one of my favorite books and it can’t be adapted.’ That was until I read Ryan North’s script, nodding enthusiastically at every great idea, every moving moment, every scene that made me want to grab my pencil right away.” said artist Albert Monteys. “A good adaptation shines new light on the original, I hope we managed to do just that. I think we did, somewhat, in the telegraphic schizophrenic manner of tales of the planet Tralfamadore—which is what comics are, after all.”

SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning Archaia imprint, home to inspiring graphic novels such as Big Black: Stand at Attica by Frank “Big Black” Smith, Jared Reinmuth, and Ameziane, We Served the People by Emei Burell, The Realist by Asaf Hanuka, Girl on Film by Cecil Castellucci and Vicky Leta, Melissa Duffy, V. Gagnon & Jon Berg, New World by David Jesus Vignolli, About Betty’s Boob by Vero Cazot and Julie Rocheleau, Waves by Ingrid Chabbert and Carole Maurel, The Grand Abyss Hotel by Marcos Prior and David Rubín, and more.

“The trust and support shown by the Vonnegut family is gratifying for everyone who poured their hearts into ensuring we could best represent Kurt Vonnegut’s seminal work while creating something new in the graphic novel space,” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “We believe we’ve created a gateway book for new Vonnegut readers and a book any longtime fan will admire and want on their shelves.”

Print copies of SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE will be available for sale in September 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.
